City-Ships

The bottoms are made out of magic materials that don’t burn or break and are very stable. As magic became less common, the city-ships kept building, but out of wood. The newer wood can burn (does burn), occasionally breaks, and isn’t super stable. People just sort of keep cobbling on more structures haphazardly. They have a huge tank filled with fresh water at the center of each city, but fresh water is still somewhat hard to come by. People collect rainwater, because only the bottoms are piped properly to deliver water (upper level children climb down and carry up buckets). Some ancient magic purifies water that sweeps into the partially submerged tank (which also serves as ballasts in real emergencies).Cityships are protected by fleets of ships of all types (mostly seized from “intruders”), so outsiders rarely see them. All table scraps are dumped for the kraken on weekends, non-edible sewage is put into the ancient hydroponics system. Some ships have broken sewage/hydroponics/water-purification systems (it’s considered magic, few know how they work and it was built long ago). Those ships are much less prosperous and usually much smaller. Cityship bottoms are riddled with canals that the seawater flows through, and they have high enough ceilings that some of the larger pirating ships can sail through. To navigate the higher levels, a large amount of climbing is necessary - there’s a lot of haphazard ladders and roofs serving as floors and such.

Propulsion

The ships are propelled by wind and tides and if a need to actually move occurs, they are propelled by the power of krakens.

Weapons & Armament

At least a sixth of the inhabitants are armed with swords and rudimentary pistols. However, the ship itself is not weaponized.

Armor and defense

The lower layers are made out of a nearly indestructible material, but the upper layers are completely vulnerable.

Hangars & docked vessels

There are many docks where smaller ships are docked, delivering much-needed supplies. These are a basic means of movement as well and are constantly docking and undocking.
