Guardian World

On the planet of Anterra, a world filled with wild and untamed nature and magic, Guardians were the first creatures that rose from the chaos of the elements, born from sheer light and love for the world. They lived peacefully on the planet alongside the other sentient races that emerged, teaching them compassion, empathy and magic. Anterra flourished with life, until one day, the Guardians began to notice unnatural behavior and shapes emerging from the earth. The once noble animals that inhabited the land grew aborrent appendages and wild, furious eyes - they attacked with reckless abandon, infecting anything they touched. The humans, the draconids and the treefolk - the Guardians' most trusted friends - began to act selfishly and with unnatural paranoia, closing themselves away from the Guardians and their allies. For the first time in centuries, the Guardians were shunned and turned away, forcing them to fight against the corruption on their own.   War raged between the Guardians and the parasitic creatures that emerged from the earth. After countless battles and thousands of casualties, they discovered the source of the parasites: a creature of eldritch old, its influence seeping into the minds of humanoids and Guardians alike, inhibiting their voices of reason and their desire to live. It could not be destroyed - it was born within the core of Anterra, and doing so would mean destroying their only home. In one final effort to repress the dark god, a noble Guardian leader sacrificed himself to seal it away, using his own body as a fleshy prison for the abomination. Before the eldritch god was sealed, it left one final prophecy: it will reincarnate in the body of a human, born from nothingness, and render the world to ash.   The Guardians swore to protect their home and the species they coexisted with, seeking to eliminate the dark god's reincarnation at the source. Even if it meant that they had to be forgotten by the rest of the world, it was a sacrifice they were willing to make in order to protect their home and find the reincarnation. As a result, they developed a system of assignation: before a human is born, a Guardian will be assigned to watch over them and designate them as their godchild. While humans would not be able to feel their presence, Guardians would immediately be able to recognize another Guardian's presence around a mortal, designing them as safe: after all, if the eldritch horror was to be born of nothing, then if a mortal was found without a Guardian, they would be targeted and eliminated before it could grow strong.   Millennia have passed since this event, with humans building great cities and rich cultures, with the stories of guardian angels and evil gods being no more than myths and legends, passed on to their children and to strangers around campfires. However, parts of the darkness have begun to seep through the earth again for the past few centuries, and with a devestating earthquake having just recently occured, it's become clear that that something evil is truly coming...
