Spooktober 2024 - Carrakith

The Carrakith is a fearsome and twisted monster species, native to the Shroud-ridden skies of Grimvæl. Its appearance combines the grotesque features of a giant bird of prey with the decayed, nightmarish attributes of an eldritch beast. Dripping with a black ichor, its skeletal wings stretch unnaturally wide, while its body is covered in jagged, interlocking scales that provide both protection and camouflage against the darkened skies.   The Carrakith’s most notable feature is its elongated, razor-sharp beak, which can tear through flesh and bone with ease. Its talons, long and curved, are capable of grasping prey mid-flight or shredding them apart. Despite its decayed look, the Carrakith has a robust skeletal structure, enabling it to soar with surprising speed and agility.   Carrakithii are commonly found in regions of Grimvæl where the Shroud is densest, particularly in mountainous areas or ruins of once-great cities. The thick fog of the Shroud provides the ideal cover for their aerial ambushes, making them nearly invisible until they descend upon their prey. These creatures make their nests in high cliffs or hollowed-out spires, constructed from the bones of their victims.   Carrakithii are apex predators within the Shroud, and their hunting tactics revolve around ambush and overwhelming force. Using their wide wingspan to silently glide through the fog, they stalk their prey from above before diving down at deadly speeds. The creatures prefer to attack from behind, seizing their targets with their powerful talons before carrying them off to be devoured in their nests.   Socially, the Carrakith are solitary hunters, but they have been known to gather in small, loosely affiliated flocks during particularly harsh seasons or when food is scarce. When they gather, the skies darken with their massed forms, and their screeching echoes across the landscape, a sound that is often the last thing their prey will hear.
