Deichure

The Deichure are a sentient, humanoid species that are highly tied to the natural magic of their surroundings. They study magic and biological sciences that allow them to use the plants, animals, and climate around them to their fullest. While seemingly physically eerie to many other humanoids due to their orb-like eyes and legless anatomy, they tend to be a peaceful race focused on stewardship of natural resources and conservation of biodiversity.   While not seeming to have attained space travel themselves, some of them have been known to be scattered across the galaxies due to magical and temporal anomalies.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Deichure are mostly humanoid in silhouette, but one major difference is that the Deichure seem to lack legs, instead their torsos are 'suspended' via some sort of energy projection over a series of rings, and the channeling of this energy through and around the rings allows them to move, 'stand', and sometimes cling to surfaces temporarily. This area, usually referred to as their 'mobility center', still perplexes many scientists. While these rings are seemingly bony structures, they are covered by a fleshy 'veil' that seems to be created by a mixture of muscle or skin and energy, causing their lower half to be almost conical in shape but more translucent the farther down it goes.   In addition to this, instead of having human-like eyes the eyes of Deichure tend to be one consistent color throughout, much like solidly colored orbs rather than being segmented into the white, the iris, and the pupil. Their patterns of skin, hair, and pigments can vary quite a bit from humans, or they can be almost mistakable for them other than their strange eyes.

Genetics and Reproduction

Despite not seeming to have..... well, genitals, Deichure still reproduce sexually, meaning by two parents mixing their genetic material. Rather than mixing gametes they instead trade packets of internal energy that seem to contain their genetic material, and this energy is mixed with the energy of the host to encode for a new Deichure child. This child grows in a pouch that forms within the area of the rings so pregnancy is not really visible from the outside, but it can still tend to change their behavior and body chemistry.

Growth Rate & Stages

As babies, Deichure have more of a tail than anything, as the rings that make up their bottom half start out very small and grow in diameter as they age. Their 'veil' starts out as a wispy, lumpy tail down to the pointy end, and it gets rounder as they grow and finally gains more of its conical shape after a few years to allow them to move on their own energy without crawling. From there their bodies are quite similar to their adult forms as they grow, until their proportions become less youthful.

Ecology and Habitats

They strongly prefer places with high concentrations of natural magic in the environment, as their natural ability to manipulate nature magic is a large part of their lifestyle. On their home planet they mainly thrive in forests, grasslands, savannas and deserts, places where life is strong, abundant or hardy, and the connection to the magic of the soil and sky is intimate to the space.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Deichure are omnivorous, but use their magic for highly productive farming first and foremost. They practice sustainable farming and livestock raising, and have a palette that appreciates earthy herb flavors as well as rich meats and alcohols. They are both farmers and hunter gatherers for the things that can't be domesticated, but they always harvest at a sustainable rate.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Have good sight in a very wide arc due to how light seems to be refracted through their orb-like eyes differently. They can see fine details and tend to have a very good sense of depth, and it's thought that they can vaguely see some forms of magic which aids in their use of it on their home planet.

Civilization and Culture

Common Dress Code

While not strictly a 'dress code', Deichure tend to wear more robe-like or dress-like outfits due to their legless nature causing skirts and wraps to be a more natural fit than, well, anything with leg holes. They tend to wear their clothes long to protect their skin as they traverse the underbrush, and as such the sleeves and bottoms of their garments tend to be thick and tear-resistant. They also tend to be ornamented with colorful patterns that communicate their societal role, age, or even some other type of status.
