Time Before Prison
Little is known about Darian prior to his imprisonment on the Hollowed Isles. The Trace happened upon an underground dungeon the entrance of which was marked by a tall empty tower. The halls of the dungeon seemed to be burrowed by a gelatinous cube with chambers holding creatures and bizarre technology. Among which was a long dead and shackled aboleth, inspiring several ooze experiments in an adjacent chamber. There was also a dead and dissected Ilithid/Mind Flayer. Strange maps and technology from other worlds were also found including a strange glass globe used to track the interaction and movement of planer systems.
All of this was left to Darian's assistant, Akuma, the Oni, and his undead acolytes. Darian had concocted a contingency plan for if he ever became captured on his last mission. He had spent a considerable amount of money and time crafting a device that would hold enough magical essence inside to support a teleportation spell on the Hollowed Isles, the land without magic. He left a note of instructions for Akuma to follow so that he could get the device to Darian in his prison, but he overestimated Akuma's obedience. With his master gone, Akuma neglected the instructions and chose to serve his own goals. He also deceived Darian's undead minions claiming that their master placed him in charge and that they were to follow his instructions.
Back At Square One
After several months of imprisonment and with no sign of his servant Akuma, Darian realized he had been blind to the Oni's lack of loyalty. Darian's apathy towards other creatures caused him to overestimate the loyalty of Akuma and took him for granted.
Two years later the device was found by Sabrina, and curious of its creator's abilities and goals, she assembled a team to rescue him from the Hollowed Isles. With him now rescued and a new team assembled, Darian saw an opportunity to continue his plan. The first step would require a powerful artifact, one that could not be found on Allrealm. He spent almost a year researching and acquiring the equipment needed. Slowly, the device was finished. A platform that could send him and his team to the location of the needed item, and the boarders of reality could no longer keep them from it.
The Party Called Vox Machina
In preparation for them to retrieve the artifact, an alien skull with a powerful spirit trapped inside, Darian used powerful extra planar divination magic. He calculated there were approximately 148 different realities where a desired object would exist and each one more different from the last. He prepared a plan for each reality that they are most likely to be sent to. Because there were so many different options it would be futile to try and share 40 different plans with his team so he waited for them to appear at their destination before assigning objectives.
The time came and the platform brought them to reality number 40. The land of Tal'Dorei, home to the mighty adventuring party of Vox Machina. Under normal circumstances this would have been a bloodbath, but at this time Vox Machina was at a unique disadvantage as their realm was in the middle of a dragon attack. One by one each member fell and the skull with a crystal gem in the eye socket was retrieved, and Darian returned back to Allrealm.
