Jack van Tassell

Master John "Jack" Aubrecht (a.k.a. Jack)

Orphaned by The Court of Malice' King of Pain this enterprising and companionable lad won the heart of the Van Tassell family with his brave demeanor in the wake of the loss of his father and mother in The Tragedy at The Gallows Faire. Soldiering on through adversity and helping others even in the midst of his own tragic loss. He exemplified perseverance and heroism in response to crushing adversity. Recognizing his admirable strength of character, Burgomeister Baltus van Tassell took the boy into his family as a ward.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Jack is possessed of a lads nervous reserve of energy and can set to a hard task or a long run ably. He is growing into a fine man, but is currently, a young man with years yet to become who he will be.

Body Features

Slender of frame in his youth, Jack is athletic of build, narrow of hip and perhaps slightly narrow of shoulder, not built for brute soldiering, but not overly thin.   He is a tousle-haired lad with thin, fine features. Handsome as a boy. Young ladies look on him with interest.

Facial Features

A fair faced, good-boned boy. Jack has pleasant and amiable features, if a little recently-haunted by his loss and the upheaval of his life. His skin is clear and pleasantly fair from being indoors in the woodshop with his father out of the sun of the pasturage and fields of Westfell.

Apparel & Accessories

Jack now dresses in the manner of a young master of a well-to-do household. White linen shirt. Vest . Knee breeches and white stockings with quality leather shoes. He does not wear jewelry, seeing it as 'girly'.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Raised to the age of apprenticeship as a woodcarver, his simple, provincial life was upended when his family went to the gallow's fair at The Ravensgallows away west of the village, and The Court of Malice struck. Laying low his mother and father amidst the panic and tumult of the cursing of the land when the ground cracked and wicked thorns and spikes bust forth by the black powers of Der Erlkönig killing with abandon in the mayhem that ensued.   Seeing the terrible plight of his people and seizing the moment to act, heroic Jack picked his way with care through the black brambles and thorny dreadhedge that emerged upon the fairgrounds and rescued several elderly, women and other children through tireless endeavor. pulling the hurt to safety, including one Katrina Van Tassell, the Mayor's adoptive daughter and ward.

Sexuality

Jack is, a fourteen year old boy. And very interested, yet cautiously so, in young ladies. And has kissed a pretty parlour-maid of Squire Van Tassell's house at her acceptance.

Education

Trained by his father as a woodcarver, jack is accomplished at whittling trifles of wood with a smallknife, but only mildly versed in the trade and art of the chisel and lathe. He is industrious, however and takes comfort in helpful tasks and domestic harmony.

Employment

As the newly-made ward of the Burgomeister, he is yet to be apprenticed to a craftsperson. Though he is definitely of an age to do so. Zoltan Meszaros, the Genovian village handyman, while no true guildsman of the craft of woodcarver, knows some of the trade and may take the lad on as an assistant to at least keep him at work in the art.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Jack comported himself with the highest character and showed true valor and presence of mind in the tragedy at the Gallow's Fair.

Failures & Embarrassments

Jack is uncomfortably smitten with the dazzling Katrina Van Tassell. A village beauty and the other adoptive ward of his new master, Baltus. He finds it terribly awkward and taxing to speak with her though he longs to. At length. About anything. Just to be near her.

Mental Trauma

Jack will not stray near The Ravensgallows for love or money.

Intellectual Characteristics

Jack is bright and inquisitive within the bounds of good taste. He is reasonably quick to uptake new lore or the kenning of crafts and arts, though not exceedingly so.

Morality & Philosophy

Jack is a good lad at his core. Brave and true-hearted. His recent spate of ill-fortune not serving to turn him permanently bitter or cynical, he persists in addressing tasks and chores with intent. He is forward thinking while present in the moment and applies himself wholly to his labors at hand. He looks at the world with the aspect and mien of a future craftsman.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Jack dreams of regaining stability in his life. His whole world is turned upside-down. He feels an innate desire to help people in need. And he is unsettled by his emerging feelings for the beautiful and comparatively cultured Katrina Van Tassell, his erstwhile sister. Jack is motivated by his bravery, cleverness and industrious nature.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Jack is good at tasks and chores but fares poorly at confidently engaging with young ladies.

Likes & Dislikes

A true son if Ruritania, Jack loves the rolling hills and velvet pastures of his homeland. He enjoys the fine woods so easily gotten from the primeval Tulgeywood and the working of it into beautiful things.   He disdains speaking about his personal tragedies and dislikes pity or maudlin attitudes to his situation. He is bravely soldiering on with his life and would not care to discuss the matter thank you very much.

Virtues & Personality perks

Jack is brave of a certainty. Clever by all means. Self possessed if boyish. A bit more introspective and serious than other boys as happenstance has matured him slightly more than other boys. An aspect that is found to be irresistible to some girls of a comparable age.

Vices & Personality flaws

Left alone, Jack does suffer from a byronesque melancholia. He hides this malaise from others, allowing it only in solittude. He feels deeply the loss of his mother to whom he was beloved. And he fails to find attachment to his adoptive mother Elvessa, though she finds him thoroughly charming and dotes on him as a fashion plate and dress-up model for her.
