The Northern Open Fields

The northern open fields is unique due to both the resources it contains as well as its long period of isolation from anyone looking to exploit its riches. It is located on the northeastern mountains, where the winters can get as cold as -20 Celsius. The mine is not visible from a distance, as it has been coated by countless winters worth of snow.   The field contains a wide variety of metals and other resources scattered across a field of roughly 1.000 square meters. Some of the metals are closely connected to one another, while some can be directly picked from the surface. There have been reports of similar fields across the mountains, however much smaller in scale. While there is no real way to estimate the total size of the reserve, it is estimated that the reserves could go down as deep as 30 meters in height.   The initial discovery of the mine happened when a group of mountain people led by the mountain people leader were trekking through the mountainside, hunting prey to feed their colony. Hunters saw small elevated bumps on the surface and took a chance on there being possible animal corpse they could thaw to survive.   Upon removing the snow, the hunters notice a plate-like metal shape, formed from a type of metal they had never seen before. It was not in the shape of a rock, neither was it smooth as if it were smelted. The metal was deformed on its edges, carrying dark burnt like marks on its surface. When pulled out from the ground, they saw that the metal was much lighter than any other metal they had seen in the past. Catching the attention of these huntsman, they decided to bring that piece back with them to their base.   Not long after, idle populations of teens accompanied by the kings guards were sent to the field to unravel the field from its snowy grave. Similar metals were found scattered across the surface, along with a wide variety of other unique looking metals and stripes of different colors.   Mining operations started almost immediately, with there being at least 15 - 20 miners at any given time. Being a miner slowly was considered to be a noble and respected job between the mountain people, as there were many dangers in the field. There have been cases where a group of miners all were contracted with severe nausea and fever. While most were able to recover, several older miners were not able to survive. No signs of any sickness were uncovered in any of the other survivors.   Blacksmiths spent countless hours attempting to smelt the found materials in their base of operations. There have been cases when during the experiments explosions or poisonings took place due to the lack of understanding of the site.   Since the discovery, there has been constant supervision of the site to ensure that no one is able to enter the area unless permission is granted. Wooden guard towers as high as 5 meters up have been erected on the four corners of the facility, as well as a wooden palisade.   The location is of upmost importance to the mountain people both sentimentally and economically. The high level of high quality materials smuggled into the kingdom has allowed the mountain people to receive a steady supply of food from anyone willing to trade.
