The Black Goddess

"Sometime long ago, a Goddess all in white stroked her hand through her hair. Wherever her hand passed, black followed. She flung her hand out and white flecks dotted the blackness of the night. Humans could see better in the dark and could use the stars for divination and navigation. But after a while some stars would fall down to earth and bless a birth with the Goddess' sacrifice. The light started to wane and more stars have to be given to the night so that slowly the Goddess becomes more and more black. One day the Goddess will be veiled in black and all the stars in the sky will fall down to earth. The night will once more be dark and astrology will die out, but the Crones will continue to follow the Black Goddess."

The Black Goddess is a quiet one who seldom interferes with human business. When things go out of hand the Goddess is fond of using storms to show her displeasure. Her favorites use air or water or a combination of the two.   Although she is a peaceful Goddess, some whisper that one day she will ask for her gifts back. They fear that when the sky goes black all Crones will die and the Goddess will turn red with their blood. The night sky will never be the same after that.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The owl is the living representation of the Goddess. The animal of night, wisdom, and all-seeing.
Although the Goddess is not yet fully black, her children have given her the name to honor her sacrifice and in preparation and acceptance of her coming form.     Some call her the Twin Goddesses due to a misreading of the story. They have separated the story into two Goddesses, one white and the other black. The interpretation is that the Black Goddess brings the night sky and the White Goddess add stars to it. At the end of a cycle they will switch roles and continue their routine.
