Sybil

In real life, sybils were regarded as the soothsayers to the great emperors, and somewhat obviously excellent liars whether they were legitimate psychics or not. A bad prophecy was rarely regarded as "oh, thanks for warning me," and more often an excuse to have your head on the chopping block. For a Sybil of the Reman Court, though, they were second only to the Vestal Virgins in reverence. If a sybil says you're going to die, get your affairs in order. However, pretty much as soon as the religious leaders swooped in at the tail end of the Chaos of Rema, sybils were considered way too Reman for anyone's taste, and so the act of being psychic was gradually viewed more and more as both a mental illness and possibly stupid due to reaching across to another universe or another part of it and that's tied up with the devil or demons and if you invoke the evil thing, you give it power... yeah it's a headscratcher how people find new ways to discriminate sometimes. Current sybils may be ushered towards religious life (hint: not passing on their traits to offspring) or otherwise face ostracization. A great example of this is Bekah Alinari, who can see ghosts but must keep it hidden so she doesn't lose her job or get taken away from the children she looks after.

Qualifications

Display powers of precognition on three different occasions, reported to the emperor or local governor and investigated. Be a Reman citizen (the worry is that a non-citizen would not be loyal enough). Be pagan. Swear allegiance to the order of Sybilines (one of the few occasions in which they absolutely should not swear allegiance to the emperor himself. Someone has to steer the ship towards the next emperor pick if the current one goes cuckoo)

Career Progression

Most start out working for a mayor or governor who then vouch for them. Very occasionally they will work for a legion leader, although the legions have little use for a psychic (so they say). They get recommended, eventually end up in Rema.
