Serofante people of Karanya (Sair-off-on-tay)

Based on a combo of the Serer, Wolof, and Ashanti/Asante people of West Africa, these are the descendants of escaped slaves in the Zewhalish and Gutonian slave trade. The original settlers were mutineers who took over a slave ship and steered it to Karanya instead via rivers. They settled there despite it being far colder than any climate they were used to. The more they lived together, the more their cultures blended and thus created the Serer-Wolof-Asante or Serofante. When the Slavs moved in, they did not know what to make of these people without clan names they could understand, so they considered them lower class. When the Josunese cultural influences came in, they viewed lack of last names to be a sign of lower class too, and they marked them as slaves and servants. The Lady Landerly, also known as Kyria Diavolaki, offered a deal to the royals: she would run hamlets where the Serofante would live and work in the mines, and the "proper" folk wouldn't have to worry about them. The hamlets are based on the lower class villages in ancient Silla and are named after dour topics - "Nightmare," "Greatest Sorrow," and "Punishment." The people of course give their homes more cheerful names - "Hope" and "Blessing." In the present, their labors are considered a means of bringing them closer to Heaven - as if only they need to be worked to the bone and half-starved in order to get to Heaven. Among these people grew many of the "fairy-blessed," which did not help their perception in the eyes of people who wished their kids would come out "normal." The Lady did much to increase the population, luring other hapless refugees from war-torn and famine-stricken lands to Karanya with the promise of freedom and land only to enslave them to her will and her cause. Their strength, though, is in community and communication - they are working towards and backing revolutions abroad, in Kipatria and across the Atlantic.
