Tanith

Also known as: the Skyfather, the Voice in the Thunder, the Beacon, the Guiding Light   A member of the pantheon and one of the true gods of Genesis, Tanith is the god of storms and skies, creation, new beginnings, and travel. He's a light-aligned god, and the protector of the roads.   Though his domain over the skies and weather makes him quite powerful, Tanith is seen of as a protective god who shows a great deal of care for mortals. He's thought to have a great care for those who stray beyond the constraints and protections of civilization, and watches over them and guides them as they journey through the wilds.

Depictions

Tanith is typically shown as a tall man of average build, with pale skin, dark gray hair and a neatly trimmed beard. He wears a belted tunic under a hooded cloak that's always in motion as if caught by the wind, and a crown made from lightning; he'll often be shown with an upraised torch whose light resembles a star. When painted, it's common for him to shown all in varying shades of gray and silver even if the rest of the image is done in full color.

Followers

Tanith is most commonly worshipped by frequent travelers and those who live far from the stabilizing presence of large cities. However, even those who don't worship him on a regular basis will offer prayers when they're undertaking a journey, and it's thought that Tanith watches over everyone equally whether they're a follower of his or not. He's also sometimes worshipped in his creation aspect by artists and craftspeople, similar to Riev.   Dedicated followers of Tanith are most often found either maintaining his temples and outposts, or travelling the roads themselves in order to keep them safe; even members of his priesthood who are generally stationary will occasionally journey elsewhere to feel closer to their god on the open road. Though they're not overly militaristic, his chosen are typically resourceful, hardy individuals who know how to take care of themselves and others. Priests and chosen of Tanith can call on their god to affect the weather and generate lightning to protect themselves, making them a powerful force in the open wilds.

Worship Practices and Holy Days

Though he asks very little from his everyday followers, the priesthood of Tanith will conduct daily prayer with the rising of the sun. It's considered customary to offer a prayer when embarking on or finishing a journey or at the start of something new, whether it be a business venture, a marriage, the birth of a child, or any number of other things. When visiting a temple, it's customary to offer something that's come from far away, or something that the supplicant has created themselves; priests of Tanith often engage in creative practice of their own in honor of their god, and some of them are talented artisans. For a priest of Tanith, working with meteorite metal is the highest honor they can achieve. Fallen stars are considered sacred to the god, a spark fallen from his divine torch, and to retrieve and reshape a fallen star conveys a mythlike quality to one of his chosen.   Found in most towns of any size, temples to Tanith are most commonly located near the main entrance to the city and incorporate a tall spire with a carefully maintained flame burning at its summit. These temples serve as a beacon to travelers, alerting them that the end of their journey is in sight. In addition to these 'beacon' temples, it's also not uncommon to find smaller shrines dotted along well-travelled roadways to provide shelter for weary travelers. Some great temples also exist in the wilderness, founded by wandering priests over the locations of fallen stars.   Tanith's sacred day is January 1st, the start of the new year. His presence is also thought to be felt during storms, and both events are an occasion for personal celebration and communion.
