The Beginning

Written by TheHatGuy

In the beginning there was nothing. Well, not quite. They were there, floating through the Astral Sea, trying to decide just exactly what They were. Were, they a concept, an unthinkable idea that was universally understood. Or maybe a thought, but there was no one to have this thought so how could They be one?

The questions continued, were They even a They? Or maybe They were a collection of Thems? After a millenia of puzzling, They realised that They couldn't find the answer Themselves. So They set out on Their great task, to build something that would give them the answers they sought.

They pulled all their resources together and began to work, They thought it would be safest to try these experiments away from their plane of existence and so they gathered their essence together and created the Material Plane, an empty void waiting to be filled with something.

Pleased with Their new creation They continued, They took Their will and moulded it into matter and energy, into shapes and forms as yet unimagined. They started simple, creating basic elements in vast quantities, metals and ores and gasses all in a jumbled mess that made sense to no one but them. Once they had these raw materials they began to shape them, mould them into what we would call worlds or planets. But these creations were flawed, they did not provide the answers they sought. So they continued their work.

Thousands of worlds were created and none satisfied Their needs, but They were not deterred. With every world that was created, destroyed or abandoned They learnt new things, until eventually They decided to try something new.

They built a new world, this time however into the chaos They breathed just the tiniest hint of their hope into it. This hope quelled the unbridled chaos, and Life for the first time was seen. It began with plants, strange and alien these quickly overtook the world and until there was no room for anything new to exist. They begged with Life to settle down and stop their rabid consumption, but this Life had no sentience and could not listen.

By now, They had realised They were in fact multiple, and one of Them had an idea, they took a touch of the four essences of Life, the Earth, Fire, Water and Air and moulded them into colossal forms and gave to them the gift of Life, but also a new gift of sentience. These were the first Primordial Titans, huge beings of relentless power, they quickly pushed back the expansion of early Life and returned the world to a more stable existence.

However, whist these Titans had Life and Sentience, they had no understanding of one another, no morals they were beings of pure instinct and once they discovered one another they quickly began to battle and push back at each other. Nearly destroying the world in the process. Wanting to ensure the survival of Their project, four of Them gave Themselves to contain these Titans in the newly formed Elemental Planes.

Seeing their beautiful world in near ruin, drove many of Them to despair or feel that They would not find their answers here and so left the Material Plane to the far reaches of existence. Those that remained banded together, with plans of new creations to populate Their world.

One of Them came forth with an idea and breathed it into the world. He took metals from the earth, Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze and Brass and formed them into the shape of the first Metallic Dragons. Taking Platinum from the earth He formed a shape for himself and dubbed the Dragons his Children. His sister however, grew jealous of her Brother's creations, She formed mirrors of Her brother's creations in Red, White, Blue, Green & Black, creating the Chromatic Dragons.

Meanwhile another of Them came forward with His own creation. Inspired by the banished Titans he took the elements and formed them into shapes of varying sizes and filled them with Life, Sentience and Knowledge in varying amounts. These efforts resulted in the Giants.

Seeing these great successes, one of Them who had fled the Material Plane, returned from the plane they had created for Themselves, with a creation of their own. After seeking advice from Their fellows they created the first Elves, gifted with a long life and wisdom.
