The Land of Fog

Coastal humid subtropical cloud forest.   All squash in the land of fog can, if hollowed out, "drink up" the fog and release it when opened. The squash will be preserved and sealed perfectly until then, and releases a vast torrent of fog. If exposed to heat or cold immediately after sealing, the fog will be thusly hot or cold. People who have done this for a long time can also make clay pots that can do this. Also, if you do it at the right time, you can mix poison or medicine into the fog.   Deep-seated rivalry with the Court of Fog.

Phase 2

The Land of Fog is a community borne of fear and mourning. Despite the differing cultures and values and languages of the many tribes that came together to settle here, everyone knew someone who was lost to the fog. A mother, a son, a cousin, a husband – the worst thing was when they came back howling and wailing, twisted by whatever lived deep within the mists. This they could agree on. With numbers rapidly dwindling – especially among their hunters, sent out to retrieve game - it appeared as there was no other choice. The leaders came together, joined their tribes into one, and settled down along the river. No one travels alone.

Phase 3

The lack of disappearances is assumed to be caused by the land's recent mastery of gourd magic. The fog, they found, could be captured and tamed in the hollowed-out gourds otherwise used for storage of food and water. An effort is made to teach this to everyone who can learn it, as it is seen as the only truly preventative measure against the fog. Both gourd farming and beekeeping have seen a massive boom in popularity for this reason, and fascinating new cultivars and uses for both gourds and wax have sprung from this.   Early attempts by some to subjugate the gourd farmers failed miserably even before the medicinal and poisonous fogs were created – it's rather difficult to defend against angry farmers when you can't see them coming.
