Vavern Species in Gates of Eternity | World Anvil

Vavern

Particularly elusive and rare type of wyverns (also called vampiric wyverns) that is believed to be spawned through some sort of divine scheme between Shadow and Beast for a reason unknown. It is also highly intelligent and capable for feats like opening doors and stalking its target at night even in the middle of the city, making it a really, really dangerous combatant.   It is also heavily magical, capable of camouflaging itself in the darkness and suppressing noises it make, which makes fighting it at night a VERY bad idea. Probably the worst possible. Thankfully its intelligence make it avoid humans, especially those that it deems a threat - it still attacks drunks, children, elderly and women, sometimes also lone men.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Several metres long reptiles clad in quite resistant scales and leather. Two legs at the back and two legs (fused with their leathery wings). Long mouth filled with sharp teeth. Their scales and leather is dark like coal, with only their teeth and eyes bearing different colours. It also has a line of small bone protrusions at the spine.

Genetics and Reproduction

Details unknown due to its ellusive nature, but believed to be similar to other wyverns - males and females, mating period, laying eggs and hiding them somewhere until they hatch. However, wherever they do it, they were never found, making proving it rather hard.

Ecology and Habitats

They actually prefer living close to human settlements, targetting farm animals and lone humans. They hunt at night, on day hiding mostly in abandoned structures or caves - basically wherever there is dark enough for them, so such places are a must.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Blood. Vaverns 'eat' blood that they suck out from their victims. They approach without making sounds and then attack, hoping to kill the prey immediately (for example by using its mass to hit their heads or by slitting throats and so on), then sucking their blood out when they are no longer capable of fighting.   Two different tactics they use is either 'attacking' lone farms and killing everything that lives there in one night (sometimes only farm animals), or prolonged hunting at cities, where their killings can be sometimes mistaken for a vampire being in the area (or vice versa). Both ways end with them gaining enough blood for a while and retreating to their well hidden hideouts for a sort of half-hibernation while it is digested - thus the long periods of silence between hunts.   They are also extremely hard to target since they tend to abandon their hideouts after such sleeps, moving somewhere else... which they also do when they feel threatened.

Biological Cycle

Hibernate for winter in some faraway from civilization place, in lairs dugged in soft ground.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Extraordinary sight even in darknesss, probably with a sort of rudimentary echolocation using sounds that only itself - or othern vaverns - can hear. It can also detect heat sources. Other senses probably weak or nearly nonexisting.
