Thorvern Species in Gates of Eternity | World Anvil

Thorvern

Also commonly known as spike wyvern or thorn wyvern, thorverns are a particularly nasty, dangerous and agressive subspecie of wyverns that are armed with a sharp bone protrusions that they are more that capable of using it to hunt their prey and defend themselves against hunters and other carnivores.   It is, thankfully, relatively rare (much more than typical wyverns), and extensively hunted for trophies and materials.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Several metres long reptiles clad in quite resistant scales and leather. Two legs at the back and two legs (fused with their leathery wings). Long mouth filled with sharp teeth. What differentiates them from normal wyverns is the line of bone protrusions on their spine, tail and wing edges.

Genetics and Reproduction

Thorverrns have a mating season in summer. During it males fight for the right to copulate with females which then lay 5 to 10 eggs, in most cases in or near their winter lair. After few weeks younglings hatch, very soon hunting for their own.

Ecology and Habitats

Thorverns are widespread especially in hotter climate - as reptiles they are coldblooded, meaning they prefer living in hot environment. While there are still some of them in the central-eastern Karathia (where they are still far less widespread than griffins), it is only because they can hibernate through winter.   They prefer lands with thriving megafauna and general wildlife, in most cases getting closer to settlements only when they lack food or there is too many of them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Meat, especially of large herbivores. Hunt by flying and then diving (with its claws at the front), preferably killing the target instantly and then devouring it. If not, it will proceed either to fighting on a ground, or retreats back to air, either to another dive attack or to retreat altogether and search for another prey.   They are heavier than normal wyverns and due to that they are worse at flying than them, making their hunting grounds smaller and forcing them to migrate from time to time, often pushing other flying carnivours from their territory... and sometimes towards the civilized lands.

Biological Cycle

Thorverns - as all wyverns - are surprisingly good diggers, capable of digging out lairs in soft ground when they hide (and hibernate) through the winter. When found they are easy to kill, on the other fact they mostly hide during the first snows meaning that it quickly covers their lairs, making it very hard to discover (not to mention that it mostly occurs in the far away places so that it isn't disturbed).
