Inri Character in Gates of Eternity | World Anvil

Inri

Prophet Inri

Inri is considered one of the most influential people in the history of Gates of Eternity, one who managed to shaped the world into what it is today. His teachings longtermly influenced - together with teachings of visenian Lady - and helped shaped what can now be considered a karadian civilization. He created one of the most widespread religions - that later on spread throughout majority of Eastern Karadia, converting for example Kyriah, Silician Coast and Nikopolan Hegemony, waiting for an occasion to march further.   It is also a religion that is considered a biggest threat to continued existence of Imperial Religion, with lands of Khem and Hellana treated nearly as divine battlegrounds - all of this while remaining a part of the Imperium and acknowledging the existence of imperial gods, with the inrithian 1st Commandment considered a deadly threat.   He was crucified at 3rd March 125 PIE, in city of Aktaab, now a center of faith dedicated to himself, and his God whose religion he reformed and reorganized to the point of launching a de facto schism, which was the main reason of his eventual execution. Execution that he foresaw, which only helped his new religion spread far and wide.

Tenets of Faith

Ten commandments:
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. - Which is considered by modern inrithists not as a denial of other gods godhood, however a commandment to consider God as the one above all of them, and the one most worthy of worship.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. - Which is considered to mean not making any sort of idols, since God (rather than Inri Himself) will not manifest in any 'form' to the believers, since He transcends any forms.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. - Considered to mean not break vows made in God's name, do not commit blasphemies or sins in the name of God.
4. Remember the satham day, to keep it holy. - Setting a one day in week, called satham by senachians (early inrithians), as a day dedicated to God, which includes refraining from work and visiting church.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother. - A pretty self explanatory commandment.
6. Thou shalt not murder. - A commandment that forbids murdering other mortal beings, while leaving a certain 'leeway' in terms of killing in self-defense, in war, or executions according to law.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. - Another self-explanatory commandment, that forbids all adulterous affairs.
8. Thou shalt not steal. - Self explanatory once again.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. - In other words, do not lie about other mortal being, to not attempt to frame him/her into something, to not lie in front of the court and so on.
10. Thou shalt not covet neighbour's house, wife, or anything else. - Self-explanatory.

This ten commandments sum up the basis of Inri's teachings, actually being more of a codification of a basis of older aktaabian beliefs of senachian tribes, simply defined and slightly enhanced by Inri. That also added a variety of other teachings, including for example a condemnation of slavery (although inconsequential, since Inri's teachings can be summed up to 'slavery isn't evil in itself but it leads people to commiting evil deeds.'), papal authority, and monogamy, with a singular exception of receiving special dispensation in terms of first wife infertility and so on.

Holidays

A variety, including the anniversaries of His birth and Crucifixion (considered most holy of all days dedicated to Him).

Divine Goals & Aspirations

As in terms of all gods, mostly incomprehensible for mortals. Believed to cater for the believers in the afterlife while playing the Great Game to spread His faith throughout the world, with certain (for example conversion of Nikopolan Hegemony) successes.

Personal history

Inri was born in a desert elf city of Aktaab around 90 PIE, with exact date unknown but estimated at early spring by early inrithian writers. His parents names were - according to the Gospel of his students - Ahrim and Manra. He was an elder man, a reputable craftsman of unsure trade, with few children of his previous marriage. She was a young virgin, dedicated to worship of the Yehavei, a monotheistic God of Aktaab and Senach.   After death of her family, she married Ahrim. It was a marriage only in name - she was to care from him, while he was to ensure her financial wellbeing to allow her to continue worshipping Yehavei as a far ancestor of nuns of today, with no sex involved. Ahrim was simply old, no longer interested in sex, more caring about his eternal life and thus willing to commit himself to piety.   Surprisingly, Mahra became pregnant - after meeting a spirit that claimed that the child in her belongs to Yehavei and is a long awaited Messiah. She was startled, of course. Ahrim equally as much, but certain signs that accompanied the pregnancy made him rethink his earlier doubts.   After birth, young Inri grew quickly into a bright and kind children. His charisma was indisputable, just as his knowledge of aktaabian religion. As a young adult he was more than capable of debating elder scholars - and winning. His name spread far and wide, as he began to call himself Son of Yehavei, while teaching a doctrine of tolerance, mercy and forgiveness.   With a number of miracles Inri commited - including ressurection and a lone pilgrimage to city of Irem, a feared city of worshippers of eldritch abomination that did not survived His visit - the majority of Aktaab and Senach were quickly converted. The rest of old faith worshippers - priests and clan elders especially - hated Inri and schemed to have him killed.   They finally succeeded, as Inri foreesaw. His crucifixion was an end to his mortal history, a sacrifice he has made for mortal races. All achievements of the plot of old faith adherents and human tribes were made null, as after being crucified in Aktaab he once again shown himself to the believers, and he did that multiple times, ensuing the complete conversion of Senach (soon renamed Inrithia), with kingdom of Aktaab destroyed by humans and later on reconquered by inrithian crusade.   From then on inrithian faith spreads, slowly but surely.

Sexuality

Gospels does not contain any indication for any sorts of sexual activity with Inri as a participant. He himself seems to be staunch oponent of polygamy and divorces, teaching that marriages are until death and that every man should take one wife, and not any more (with an exception, that he makes for marriages with unfertile wifes).   He also was a determined opponent of keeping concubines and sex slavery. His stance on slavery as a whole and sodomy was never defined. Over time his religion 'drifted' to opposing slavery as an institution, with approach on sodomy rather negative but not nearly as strongly as slavery.

Education

Believed to be teached by a priests in local temple in Aktaab, but not for long as he quickly proved to be more intelligent and educated than him.

Accomplishments & Achievements

  • The only confirmed case of ressurection of mortal after few days of death.
  • Destruction of city of Irem, and giving and end to aberrant worship there.
  • Creating completely new religion on the basis of Yehavei religion.
  • Returning after death and showing the proof of his godhood.

Morality & Philosophy

If his actions in the Gospel are any indication of his mortality & philosophy, then Inri was (and is, albeit as a Greater God) an extremely moral and caring person, helpful for the weary and sick whom he healed and about helping whom he teached, teaching about forgiveness and mercy.   That is, in the very same time, also just, that will extend his hand to everyone who asks him for it, but will be resolved in terms of penance for those, who will refuse that and continue to wallow in their sins. In a way being a sort of a fusion between imperial gods Judge and Mercy.

Social

Social Aptitude

Extremely charismatic, and practically incapable of losing in any sort of debate (at least those that were mentioned in the Gospels).
