Phandelin

Read aloud, "The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some build on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins-crumbling stone walls covered in ivy briars- surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town. As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
If Sildar Hallwinter is with the party add, "Sildar appears to be more at ease. 'My friends,' he says, 'let us secure lodgings. I am told the local inn is quite quant.'"

Government

Ran by a governor that is elected on a yearly basis.

Infrastructure

Dirt roads.

Assets

Stonehill Inn: Standing in the center of town, the Stonehill Inn stands as a newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing the new arrivals with curiosity. Has six rooms for rent: Sildar Hallwinter will take one if he sruvives the goblin encounter.

Stonehill in

Owner Is a tall half-orc with a slash across his face that has scared over a long period of time. His name is Nors and he wears tattered overalls and plain clothes. He came to Phandelin to prospect in the mines and escape his clan that were not kind to him as a halfbreed. He is disqusted with violence and views the Redbrands and the Governor as scum for commmitting violence against the town and Harbin Wester (governor) for allowing them to do it. He avoids causing trouble with the Redbrands to avoid causing trouble with his adopted kids Rand and Egwene, both humans who have been abandoned by their families and work for Nors in the Sleeping Giant. He can be seen cares for a local cat that breathes with a raspy exhale.

Rumors

Narth is an old farmer who has heard rumors about Sister Garaele, who runs the Shrine of Luck, has been leaving town frequently and returning tired and wounded.
Elsa, the barmaid: Heard that Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper, is a former adventurer and frequently sends letters with the courier out of the town; at a rate only equal to the Governor Harbin Wester.

Lanar, a miner: Orc raiders have been seen on the east side of the Triboar Trail and Harbin Wester has placed a bounty to remove them.

Obden, lumberjack: Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago when they came to his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him and several townsfolk saw it happen. They grabbed his body, and his wife and kids have now gone missing.

Rand and Egwene: Qelline Alderleaf's son Carp said he found a secret tunnel in the woods, but the Redbrands almost caught him.

Freda, a weaver: The Redbrands ruffle businesses that do not pay their "tax", they avoid messing with Halia Thornton of the Miner's Exchange though.

All: Redbrands frequent the Sleeping Giant tap house

Barthen Trading Post

Elmar will encourage the party to rescue Gundren Rockseeker, someone he admits is an old friend, and he was looking forward to discovering the Lost Mine of Phandlin Pact. If the party did not learn the details from Sildar Hallwinter, a chracter who succeeds a DC 15 earns the information from the first two paragraphs of the "background" section of the introduction. Can be presuaded into offering a reward to rescue the dwarf. Mentions that two more of the Rockseeker brothers, Nundro and Tharden, are camped somewhere outside town. Elmar has not seen them in a tenday and expects them to return in order to resupply.

Delivering the Supplies: The characters will recieve the 10gp that they were each promised and lose possession of the wagon and its' supplies.

If asked about business, Barthen tells them that the Redbrands are making it hard on everyone, shaking down businesses and causing general mayhem.

Lionshield Coster

Hanging above the front door of this modest trading post is a sign shaped like a wooden shield with a blue lion painted on it.
The building is owned by the Lionshields, a merchant company basedin the city of Yartar(100 miles east), they ship finished goods to Phandlin and other small settlements throughout the region. This outpost has been hit hard by banditry, the most recente caravan was attacked and the cargo was captured by the Cragmaw goblins.

Linene Graywind: a sharp-tounged human woman that runs the Phandlin post, she is aware of the caravan raids but not who is at fault.

Linene keeps a supply of weapons and armor, but will not sell to anyone she believes intends to harm the town. Such as the Redbrands.

Redbrands: If Halia believes she can control the characters, she points the characters to eliminate the Redbrands at the Sleeping Giant and the hideout in the Trendesar Manor. She offers the party 100gp to eliminate the Redbrand leader Glasstaff and bring all correspondence they find in the leader's quarters. DC15 Wisdom(insight) check indicates she has ulterior motives for wanting the Redbrand leader dead

Joinging the Zhentarim: If the party removes Glasstaff, she approaches certain members of the party, who share their pursuits of wealth and power, to join the Zhentarim. Even if the Redbrand gang is completely wiped out, Halia may extend the offer to gain friends (and spies) within the party. All who accept recieve the title Fang.

The Sleeping Giant

Redbrands Ruffian Encounter:The Sleeping Giant is a ramshackle taproom at the east end of town. Four human ruffians linger on the covered porch, perched on empty ale barrels or leaning against the wall. They wear grimy scarlet cloaks, their sullen stares fixed on you as you approach. One of the thugs spits on the ground and snarls, "Well, well, here's a whole pack of little puppies. What do you want, come here to bark at us?"

If the party does not approach the Sleeping Giant the ruffians seek them out. Read aloud: As you head back into the street, you see four armed scurpolous men waiting for you. All of them are humans wearing grimy red cloaks, their hands on their weapons as they watch you. One of them says, "Time for you to move on strangers, give us your stuff and be on your way." If three ruffians are defeated the third runs back to Tresendar Manor.

Ruffian Developments: Captured or charmed ruffians can impart useful information. Warbin won't keep Redbrand prisoners until the whole gang has been defeated, can be persuaded or intimidated into changing their mind. Eveyone except the Governor is happy about the Redbrand defeat.

Sildar asks the characters to investigate the manor and the surrounding area to find Iarno and bring him back. Iarno is described as a short dark-bearded human wizard in his thirties. Once Sildar learns that Iarno is actually Glasstaff, he expresses his desire to have him captured and transported to Neverwinter to face the judgement of a higher authority. Sildar rewards the party with 200gp for removing the Redbrand threat.
