Malbolgite

Properties

Material Characteristics

Malbolgite (Hutchinsonite) looks like toothpicks of iron clumped together with orange dust on the ends, sometimes clumping up into hard spiky balls.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Malbolgite is a toxic stone made technically of thallium, arsenic and lead. Its streak is red. It is brittle and easily breaks into splinters.

Compounds

Malbolgite is usually used to make poisons with its arsenic and thallium elements. Though lead is frequently used at the time for everything from paint to sweetener in wine, because it is bonded with recognized dangerous minerals people avoid using lead from Malbolgite.

Geology & Geography

Malbolgite is found near hot springs, usually on islands with minor volcanic activity.

Origin & Source

Malbolgite has a story that such a poisonous metal could only come from devils. It is named after Malbolge, the 6th layer of Hell. Malbolge was said to be a plane of a rocky slope with constant rock slides until the Great Hag Malagard was deposed by another devil (Glasya). When Malagard was deposed, her body was used to refashion the plain, and the rocks left in the area became toxic. This story also gains a little credence wen pointed out that the streak color of the mineral is blood red.

Life & Expiration

It has hardness of 2. It is stable, but a child with a hammer could break it. Because of where it is formed, it is also dangerous to streams that come from the springs they formed in. Far enough down river can give it time to settle at the bottom of rivers, but the best sign of an area of a river being safe to drink is that plants grow at the sides of the river or stream. Do to the lead in it, if magic were cast on it it could only hold magic for about 3 seconds before fading.

History & Usage

History

Malbolgite has for the longest time been used as a poison. The story of its origin kept most people from trying to isolate the lead in it for the sweetness. Some witches have placed Malbolgite stones at the perimeter of their homes to ward off intruders.

Discovery

It was said to be brought into the world when the Land Devils entered through the Queen of Death's Portal. He scattered them as he went by hot springs to poison mortals.

Everyday use

For the most part it is considered a natural hazard. Its only use has been for assassins and rat catchers to make poison. Lumps of the rock is also put out by the houses of people who want to be left alone or are considered miserable cruel crones.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Witches and devil Spawn of [Devil Named Later] use it kill their enemies, but only if they want to kill them discreetly without the aid of magic or hide that magic was done beforehand.

Industrial Use

Only industrial use is grinding it down for extracts in poisons.

Refinement

The material can be used to a lesser extent in its natural state because even getting a cut with Malbolgite can be dangerous, but to be used as a proper poison, it requires it to be ground to dust.

Manufacturing & Products

Poison/ rat poison.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Some people in the know will use Malbolgite to protect against magic.

Hazards

Production is very dangerous and must be done in a contained environment so that the dust can't escape to the person producing it.
