Sometimes happiness hides, and in a city, there are a lot of places to hide. Papa always said that happiness runs to those who make music. Papa said a lot of things. Papa said the times were good, and that performing at the taverns pays well. Papa said that sometimes, seeing the smiles on the faces of the common folk was payment enough. Papa said that mom was sad because not everyone could get to hear the music. Sometimes the things you say can make someone’s day. The things that you don’t say can ruin a life. Papa never said that mom’s illness had no cure. Papa never said that his performances weren’t that good. Papa never said that he was in debt to the wrong people, and when they figured out that he couldn’t pay them, papa never said anything again.
Taverns are noisy, and I think that sometimes happiness has a tough time hearing the music. That’s why I make everyone stop talking. Before no one would notice me. In a loud place, they use their eyes instead of their ears, and it’s hard to stand out when you can barely stand up. The few that had something to say about me would say that I was dirty. They would say that I was street trash. Now when I enter the room they have so much to say to me, but they sit in silence, and once I pull out my mandolin, the happiness comes out of hiding.
I think happiness likes music because it is beautiful. Beauty attracts all good things in life. That’s why I had to leave the Citadel. The ugly iron walls scared off most the happiness long ago, but I think if I play enough, I can find the happiness again. I think maybe the happiness hides because it is sad that not everyone can hear the music. Someday I hope that I can find a place where happiness doesn’t hide.
