Other Kingdoms
The Kingdom of Asterholm
"Knowledge Lights the Way."
Capital: Highspire
Emblem: A crescent moon and pale owl mask on a deep blue shield.
Government: Constitutional Monarchy
Current Ruler: Queen Seraphine III Aster
Situated west of Val-Donal across the Sapphire Coast, Asterholm is renowned as the foremost center of learning, magic, and navigation on the continent. While its standing army is comparatively small, its academies produce exceptional wizards, engineers, physicians, and cartographers whose expertise is sought throughout the civilized world.
Unlike Val-Donal, which prizes practicality and military discipline, Asterholm believes that knowledge is the greatest defense against any enemy. Its universities welcome scholars of every race, and discoveries made in its libraries have shaped kingdoms for centuries.
Relations with Val-Donal have been friendly for generations. Asterholm supplies magical expertise, while Val-Donal exports timber, iron, and grain. Princess Lyanna Valdren frequently corresponds with Asterholm's Arcane Collegium, and several scholars have recently arrived at Fort Vigil to study the strange arcane machinery found within the mechanized beasts.
Despite its peaceful reputation, Asterholm's navy is among the finest on the western sea, ensuring that few nations mistake scholarship for weakness.
The Varyn Dominion
"Strength Commands Peace."
Capital: Karth Varyn
Emblem: A fire breathing dragon upon a dark orange shield.
Government: Military Monarchy
Current Ruler: High King Darius IV Varyn
South of Val-Donal lies the Varyn Dominion, a proud and disciplined nation whose identity has long been shaped by conquest and military service. Every noble house is expected to contribute soldiers to the crown, and nearly every citizen receives some degree of martial training.
For nearly eighty years, Val-Donal and the Dominion fought a series of bitter border wars over the fertile plains and strategic mountain passes separating their kingdoms. Villages changed hands repeatedly, countless soldiers died, and neither side could claim a decisive victory. The conflict eventually became known simply as The Long Border War.
Twenty-two years ago, exhausted by decades of bloodshed and facing growing economic strain, both monarchs signed the Treaty of Blackstone Ford, establishing an uneasy truce and fixing the current border.
Peace, however, remains fragile.
Both kingdoms continue to maintain large standing armies along the frontier. Massive keeps overlook one another across the border, patrols regularly test each other's resolve, and accusations of espionage are common. While outright war has not resumed, everyone understands how quickly a single incident could ignite another conflict.
The emergence of the northern threat has complicated matters further. Some nobles within Val-Donal resent diverting troops north while their old rival still watches from the south. Likewise, many Varyn generals suspect the stories of mechanized monsters are merely an excuse for Val-Donal to strengthen its military.
Ironically, both kingdoms now face the same dilemma: neither wishes to weaken its southern border, even as a far greater danger grows in the frozen north.
The Kingdom of Thalor
"By Tide and Trade."
Capital: Port Solis
Emblem: A silver griffin with a golden crown on an purple shield.
Government: Merchant Monarchy
Current Ruler: King Albrecht II Thalor
To the east lies Thalor, a wealthy maritime kingdom whose influence extends far beyond its borders through commerce rather than conquest. Its bustling ports connect distant lands, and its merchant fleets carry goods from every corner of the continent.
Thalor's nobles derive much of their wealth from trade rather than agriculture or warfare. Merchant guilds hold tremendous political influence, and successful captains often enjoy status equal to landed lords.
Relations with Val-Donal have generally been prosperous, though not without occasional friction. Thaloran merchants are infamous for driving hard bargains, and Val-Donal's tariffs have been the subject of many lengthy negotiations. Nevertheless, both kingdoms recognize the mutual benefits of open trade.
Since the opening of Frostspire Gap, Thalor has become one of Val-Donal's most valuable trading partners. Exotic alchemical ingredients, precision instruments, and rare textiles now arrive in greater quantities than ever before, while Val-Donal exports iron, weapons, and timber to support Thalor's shipbuilding industry.
Some rumors suggest Thaloran merchant vessels have begun encountering strange mechanical sea creatures far from the northern coast—a troubling sign that the Artificer's influence may extend beyond the mountains.
Current Political Landscape
| Kingdom | Relationship with Val-Donal | Military Strength | Primary Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Val-Donal | — | Large professional army | Defending Frostspire Gap |
| Asterholm | Trusted ally | Moderate | Scholarship, magic, diplomacy |
| Varyn Dominion | Uneasy truce | Very large | Military power and border security |
| Thalor | Friendly trading partner | Strong navy | Commerce and naval dominance |
This arrangement creates a believable geopolitical backdrop for your campaign. Val-Donal is effectively caught between two fronts: an old rival to the south that prevents it from committing its full military strength to the north, and a new existential threat emerging through Frostspire Gap. Meanwhile, Asterholm and Thalor provide opportunities for diplomatic missions, specialist aid, rare equipment, and future adventures beyond the borders of the kingdom.
