Criminal ActivityBy now The Big Five have pushed out all the other powers, and silenced those speaking out against them. They were not the first in Germany nor the world, and as such were able to quickly suppress any form of protest in the upper population. This event is now seen as being the catalyst for the already rising inequality, cementing it in place. The different corporations are now each vying for domination through all means necessary. Each corp doing it their own way, through brute force, psychological media manipulation or technological attacks.

The CORP Act
FoundingIn 2042, The Big Five have agreed upon the Corporate Non-Aggression Activity Pact, which ruled out the mutual destruction that had slowly started to take place. The rules clearly laid out what actions were acceptable or not, with most attacks having been ruled illegal and are now accompanied by a hefty fine.
This has however only transferred the damages from tangible and material, to the less tangible and personal. As instead of destroying laboratories, they are now infiltrated or VIPs killed. It all still is illegal, but seen as the lesser evil. -

Scientific achievementWhile prosthetics had already existed for decades in some form or another, none really achieved the tactile sensations that cybernetics bring. These implants directly plug into the brain, claiming a part of it for themselves and through the usage of brain-plasticity inducing drugs reforms it so as to be as good as possible in regard of the missing body part.

The Protomatrix emerges
Era beginning/endThe first form of what would later be called the Matrix appears. Unlike the movie from the last millenia, it is instead a distributed network made of interconnected wired and wireless access points. They all still speak different protocols, and several devices do not talk to eachother at all, but a first interconnectedness exists. It was also rather fragile, breaking several times in the first years. However, through the use of VR goggles or even cybernetic implants, people could travel virtually through the world and influence it, and vice-versa. Flare of '79
Geological / environmental eventA superflare erupted from the sun in early December, and arrived around Christmas. This heavily damage power supply in the western hemisphere, shutting down the Matrix. This shutdown had drastic knock-on effects, as most automatic cars and drones got blasted with strong electromagnetic waves and no reference system anymore. While on the ground everything came to a halt, in the skyline of Frankfurt several dozens of fatal crashes occurred. Most from drones hitting a skyscraper, or even breaking into one and subsequently hitting someone unlucky enough to walk by. After a few weeks, power did get restored but the Matrix was still barely functional. The job losses and disruptions in the whole country triggered a small famine, including riots in the poorer parts of town. It took almost two years for everything to return to what was then the new normal.
