'Splosion Sprout
"During our hike, we stumbled upon a skinny stalk growing out of the snow. One of our crew curiously snatched it for inspection. When he cracked it open, a colorless liquid spilled out. The crew member preceded to sneeze, which caused the plant to explode with such vigor that the snow around us evaporated. Luckily none of us were killed but the unlucky man was left heavily disfigured." - Harold Evans' Journal Entry
Basic Information
Anatomy
To the ignorant, the 'Splosion Sprout looks only like an unassuming stalk. This short skinny stem holds four seeds at the top along with an unpleasant surprise. The plant holds a thin colorless liquid that is highly explosive. The chemicals inside hold many similarities to nitro-glycerin as it's highly unstable. The intention of this explosive is to protect the seeds as it leaks out when a seed is pulled. After the explosion, the seeds scatter to new soil.
Genetics and Reproduction
This sprout reproduces via hardened seeds at the top of the stalk. If not exploded, the seeds will fall off and blow away. Seeds usually grow during the summer when other animals are foraging for food.
Growth Rate & Stages
It starts off by grounding itself when planted using the roots inside the seed. Then the stalk slowly develops but comes to a halt. The seeds won't start growing until the early summer, in which case the plant will be harvested.
Ecology and Habitats
The 'Splosion Sprout isn't picky with its environment making it very easy to grow. In the wild, it can be found on the Provector mountains and the Vindexian hills.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The 'Splosion Sprout gains energy through the nutrients in the ground and by sapping it from other plants. This plant is also very hardy and can survive without glucose for long periods of time.
Additional Information
Domestication
There is a domesticated strain of the plant species that is a common delicacy. It has a tough outer layer, with a spicy inside.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
The explosive liquid is commonly used in dynamite when excavating mines. It is also used as a main ingredient in the Provector pistol firing chamber. When the hammer hits the bullet, the liquid is released. This creates a chemical reaction launching the bullet forward. Pistols must be refilled with the chemicals regularly.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Sometimes, the roots will attach to another plant; stealing its energy. This only happens when the plant is dangerously low on nutrients.
