Fort Glen Institute

The original building (Fort Glen) was completed in 1860, just prior to the start of American Civil War. After the War the Original Fort was converted to a municipal building until 1872, at which time it was converted to a state "Normal School" for the training of teachers named Fort Glen Normal School.   In 1910 a charismatic senator (Howard Glen) from Gilmer County helped to secure increased funding for the school as it grew from one building into many. At this point it was renamed Fort Glen State University. Over the years several of Glen's descendants have followed in his political footsteps, funneling state and federal dollars into the school, cementing it as one of the leading schools in the region.   In 1986 billionaire Morris Fisk, Owner of Tri-Eagle Mining company secured a private public partnership with the University in order for it to develop programs in technology, engineering, and mineral industries. This resulted in the school being renamed The Fort Glen Institute of Technology.   In 1998 a grant from the endowment of the arts added significant programs in literature and the arts, starting the Fort Glen Institute of the Arts.
