Tower of Storms

Location

The lighthouse is located atop an 80‑foot rocky outcropping which sits about 130 feet off the coast of the Sea of Swords. It ss 35 miles due west of Phandalin and just south of the Thunder Cliffs. During low tide, travelers can descend the 100‑foot coastal cliffs overlooking the tower to a sandy beach and a narrow causeway which connects the tower to the shore.

Structure

The Tower of Storms consists of a squat, 20‑foot tall stone building with a lighthouse rising another 20 ft from the seaward side.A large lightning rod stands on the building's roof. The lighthouse beacon is open to the elements and surrounded by an iron railing.

Interior

The ground-floor structure contains a shrine to the god of storms, Talos. The 15‑foot high chapel is adorned with frescoes depicting ships being tossed in a violent storm with Talos watching approvingly. The lighting rod on the roof connects through the ceiling to an altar, and when struck with lightning, the altar can be used to bestow a divine blessing allowing for limited casting of the lightning bolt spell.

History

The Tower of Storms is considered old by residents of Phandalin. The tower became a base for the barbaric Cult of Talos. The tower was maintained by a Sea-Elf named Miraal until Moesko, an anchorite of Talos, killed her. He used powerful magic utilizing his own heart as the lighthouse's beacon to lure ships to the shore so that the cult could pillage the cargo and sacrifice the crews to their god. Several ships were successfully captured with this strategy and came to sit as wrecks beneath the tower, namely the Golden Gull, the Orca, the Sea Urchin, the Star-Crossed Lover, and the Vainglory. Miraal became a banshee who haunted the cave on the path connecting the Tower to the beach and her loyal companion, the giant crab known as Clicks, attempted to wave down any passerbys to help.
A group of adventurers were sent to the lighthouse by a druid named Reidoth and they defeated Moesko by stabbing his heart. This removed the green light in the lighthouse and broke the curse on Miraal allowing her spirit to rest.
