Forgotten Realms

Created by

The Forgotten Realms is a vast and storied fantasy world, the most iconic campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Created by Ed Greenwood, it is set on the planet Abeir-Toril, with the continent of Faerûn as its heart. From the shining spires of Waterdeep to the frozen tundra of Icewind Dale, and the shadowed depths of Menzoberranzan, the Realms teem with heroes, villains, gods, and ancient mysteries. Its rich history is marked by cataclysms such as the Time of Troubles, the Spellplague, and the Second Sundering, events that have reshaped both magic and the divine. The Forgotten Realms remains a living world of high adventure, where every story adds to its ever-growing legend.

Ah, gentle reader, gather close and let the fire crackle a while, for I have a tale to spin—a tale not of one man’s journey or a single hero’s deed, but of a vast and storied land: the Forgotten Realms. A world shaped by gods and mortals, bathed in magic and mystery, and ever on the cusp of calamity or triumph. It is not a single tale, but a great tapestry, ever-woven.

An Overview of the Forgotten Realms

It began—as many great things do—not with a clash of swords or a storm of spells, but with the imagination of a young lad named Ed Greenwood, who first breathed life into the Realms in 1967. He penned short stories of a living world called Abeir-Toril, and from those quiet beginnings, a legend grew. By 1987, it became a published setting for Dungeons & Dragons, and since then, it has been the cornerstone of countless campaigns and adventures across multiple editions.

At its heart lies Faerûn, a sprawling continent rich in history, peril, and power. But the world is far larger: Kara-Tur to the east, Zakhara to the south, Maztica across the sea, and even the sky above—Realmspace, the Sea of Night, filled with other worlds and wonders beyond counting.

The Realms are dynamic, ever-changing. Calamities such as the Time of Troubles and the Spellplague have reshaped continents, rewritten laws of magic, and even slain or exalted gods. Most recently, the Second Sundering brought an end to the Spellplague's upheaval, restoring a semblance of balance to the Weave and to the Realms themselves.

And yet, despite its sweeping scope, the Realms always make room for personal tales: a single blade drawn in Waterdeep’s alleys, a whispered promise in the shadowed forests of Cormanthor, or a last stand on a windswept battlement in Icewind Dale.

Abeir-Toril and Faerûn: The Beating Heart

The world, Abeir-Toril (often shortened to Toril), hosts many continents, but Faerûn is the most detailed, most beloved. From the bustling cities of Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter to the haunted ruins of Myth Drannor, from the snow-swept Ten Towns to the sun-blasted sands of Calimshan, every corner hums with ancient magic and mortal ambition.

Once unified with Abeir, its shadow twin, Toril has seen gods rise and fall, empires crumble, and mortals become legends. Dale Reckoning (DR) is the common calendar, and as of the latest tales—somewhere around 1505 DR, the Year of Ogres Marching—the world teeters on the cusp of new chaos and glory.

Realms Beyond the Map

Beyond Faerûn lie other lands, many seldom seen but often whispered about:

And then there’s the sky—Realmspace, a sea of stars where spelljammers glide between worlds. Even in the dark of night, the Realms are not alone.

Living Lore and Legendary Heroes

The Realms are home to a pantheon of characters as iconic as the setting itself:

But more than any legend, the Realms are defined by your characters—adventurers carving names into history, if not stone.

From Tabletop to Tale

Whether it’s in the venerable "Old Gray Box" of 1st edition, the detailed lore of 2nd and 3rd editions, the cataclysms of the 4th, or the open-ended tales of 5th, the Forgotten Realms continues to evolve. Video games like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Icewind Dale, as well as novels, comics, and now films (Honor Among Thieves, no less!), ensure the Realms are never truly forgotten.

So come, friend. Unfurl your map. Ready your dice. There are ruins to uncover, courts to navigate, dragons to best, and secrets older than gods themselves.
