Personal history

Thia was a bright, happy, brilliant child growing up. But all of that hid the undercurrent of viciousness that filled her. As she grew, she learned how to tame that viciousness - but also how to hone it, how to retool it into something greater. She grew more sly, more cunning, all kept under a cheerful yet mischievous manner that fooled even the most careful adult. Or so she thought.   As Thia grew, she learned. Schooling, of course, but also Performance. Being a Mark of Shadow Elf, Thia was taught the ways of her people - How to dance, in many different situations. Court dances, stage dances, every dance. And instruments! So many instruments were thrust at Thia, and she was expected to become at least pasable at playing them, and did she ever. Her favorite, the lute, she excelled at, she became able to dance gracefully, beautifully, and play just about any song she had learned on the lute while doing so.   This continued as she aged. She was tasked with performing for the family during the important dinners that her parents, who are the heads of House Thuranni. These dinners would bring in high ranking nobles, from near and far, trade masters of all kinds from all over the world. And Thia would perform during them to the awe and delight of everyone there.   However, Thia had been watched throughout her childhood, throughout her growth. Eyes that noticed the cruelty, the viciousness, the wickedness coursing through her veins, hidden underneath the most impeccable mask of charm and civility. As Thia continued to flourish, words were had, completely unbeknownst to Thia. Words between the Eyes that had been watching young Thia, and Thia’s Parents. Thia had a performance for the littles later that afternoon, but that day was to be spent in classes, learning of other cultures, people, languages, religions, cities, all kinds of things that fascinated young Thia, and she ate it up completely. As she was quick reading her teacher cleared his throat and called for her. When Thia looked up, she saw a man standing next to her teacher that she had never seen before.   This immediately brought up Thia’s charm. Her teacher motioned for her to come up to the desk and, with a somewhat saucy, yet graceful flare, Thia stood and walked to her teacher’s desk, eyes locked onto the man standing next to her desk, completely ignoring the poor teacher at this point. She asked the man who he was and that was when she was brought into the secret.   Mark of Shadow Elves are not just Performers, elegant and amazing, wonderful at both dance and instrument but they also have a secret sect of powerful spies and assassins. Common folk know nothing of this, of course. Only special clients - high ranking nobles, powerful trade masters and the like - have access to these spies and assassins.   These are the ones that have been watching Thia for almost her whole life. They saw through her charm and wit and grace, into the core of her, the venom, the spite, the coldness. They saw that they could take that, all of that, and turn her into a powerful, extremely successful spy and assassin.   So the training began. This training happened at night, in places that Thia never knew even existed in her own home! The home she had been living in for years and years at this point. Of course, she was expected to keep this completely silent, tell no one. No one. Of course she was also expected to keep up everything else she was doing. Lessons, performances, training, everything. This training was extensive. Poisons, antidotes, forgery, observational skills, unarmed combat, combat with knives of all kinds, ways of perceiving places and learning things such as escape routes and easy ways to get in and out of places, reading body language and learning how to truly read the insight of a person, sleight of hand, stealth, learning how to improvise...and just...so much more. She deeply impressed her Masters, they had not seen anyone as skillful and elegant and just...perfect as she in the years and years (let’s be real, elves here) that they had been training the young ones for this.   Her Parents’ Masked ball was coming up, one of the final ones for the season. It was going to be the biggest of them all. Thia was actually not even supposed to be performing for it, but she was allowed to actually go around and dance with everyone and have fun! She was so excited about it.   Thia’s Masters chose this time to finally give her her Final Test. This one actually involved the Masked ball that Thia was so excited for. Her Masters gave her a vague description of her target. She wasn’t so sure as to why this was different from the other tests but she nodded and committed each detail to memory.   Then her one of her Masters presented her a dagger and sheath. A beautifully crafted dagger, with an intricate design etched into it that makes the blood flow easily off of it. Black as a moonless night, both sheath and dagger. She asked what it was for, even though she was so excited, it was absolutely gorgeous and she strapped it to her left thigh immediately. It blended in and almost couldn’t be seen if you weren’t looking for it. Her Masters explained that that was part of the test, she was to kill her target. Actually kill her target. This would put to the test everything she had learned in the previous tests about this sort of thing. Hiding the body and doing it stealthily, killing the target quickly and quietly, finding the target in the first place without having full knowledge of what they looked like - especially at a Masked event such as what she was going to have to work with.   Thia felt the excitement she felt for both her Final test and her Parents’ Masked ball mush together into a ball of nerves, excitement, and so many feelings she couldn’t even comprehend. This was going to be her first actual kill. The first time she actually killed someone. Thankfully she didn’t have too long to dwell on her feelings and get too nervous, her Masters chose the right time to tell her - the ball was the day after next.   Thia went through the next day, dress fittings and mask picking and all kinds of things - kind of in a daze state. She didn’t let that through, so as not to let anyone know how she was truly feeling, but she was out of it.   The night of ball, Thia got ready in her room, making sure to have the dagger her Masters had given her strapped to her right thigh. She made her way downstairs and joined the throng of people waiting to be let into the ball. She searched the area, everyone she could see, trying to find her mark, but to no avail. The doors opened, and the ball began.   Thia had a blast, dancing with so many people. But in the back of her mind, the logical part of her kept her in check, keeping her looking for her target. More and more people had swept in as the night progressed, and Thia still could not find her target. Until much later in the night. She spied her target across the room. She had a gut feeling it was that person, even though she had so little information to go on, she just knew it was them. She kept an eye on them while she finished her current dance, then snaked her way across the dance floor and inserted herself into that person’s field of view, claiming the next dance. She, of course, had altered her voice and the way she spoke, and she assumed everyone had done so to be honest, to be part of the unknown at the dance.   She danced with this person for a few dances, then mimed being drunker than she actually was, sipping another drink she had grabbed from a waiter as they came by. Slurred words, swaying around, a very good drunk she was. Her partner and target helped her off the floor and to a more secluded area, telling her they - he, she figured it was a he from the deeper voice but they were trying to sound a bit more feminine - would get her some water. She looked around and made a few alterations to the area while they were gone, not much, just moving a few pillows around so that she could hide the body a bit better and such, give herself time to slip away.   They came back with some water and a fan, how considerate. How unfortunate that they had to die. But they did. Thia sipped the water, thanking them. They were around a corner, hidden from view of the rest of the party, what a perfect place and she hadn’t even had to bring them here. She leaned on her partner/target, resting her head against their shoulder, and in response an arm slid around her waist. She shifted, slipping the dagger out of its sheath (thank the gods for slit side dresses) and snuggled close, dagger in hand. The arm around her tightened a little before she slid the dagger home.   The grunt she heard...sounded oddly very familiar? She pulled away in confusion, laying the person down to finish the job. She knew the first hit would not kill, especially not immediately, but the loss of blood would kill eventually. She shoved the person’s mask up and...it was her Father. She started to cry, even though she knew she had to finish the job. She held the dagger tightly and shoved her own mask to the side, revealing her face. She opened her mouth to start to explain - when her father told her he already knew what she was going to say. He knew this was coming, not this exactly, but he knew someone would die tonight, he just didn’t expect it would be him. He asked her to take care of the family, told her he loved her, and then told her to finish the job. She sobbed silently, tears dripping down on him, as she told him she loved him so much and she was so sorry, then she finished the job. She slid the dagger home in its sheath, and then slipped out of the area, mask in place, tears still streaming down her face. She slipped out of the ball room in general and ran upstairs.   Upstairs she ripped her mask and dress off, cleaning the blood off of herself - the whole time sobbing openly. She began shoving important things into a pack, making sure to get everything she would need. She grabbed her (sizable) amount of money that she had been stowing away up until now, because she was unsure what she wanted to spend it on, she had thought about buying something for the kids, but now she knew she needed it. Then she slipped out the window, pack in hand, dressed in her black leather.   Thia, after running away from home after killing her father, spent the next 8 or 9 years traveling up and down the Sword Coast, never venturing past the Spine of the World. Once money finally ran out, she either begged, fucked, stole, or killed for what she needed to get by. She finally settled in Athkatla. Here she spent the next 7 or so years integrating, and then working for, the Shadow Thieves. She quickly rose through the ranks, sleeping with those she thought were easy targets to help her move up, killing off those she thought would hold her down, and just showing off her (extremely varied) skills in general.

Well.
?

i did it.   i...finally did it.   Aurelthia Chin'nesstre Thuranni   i told someone.   It's amusing they thought my full name was just "Thia Thuranni" - even after i had explained i was the First born child (and...as far as i know, only?) of the sect of Thuranni house (one of the most major sects, to be honest) that i was born into.   Did...they think i wouldn't have a 'full' name? Heh. Oh well. It's not like it matters, to be honest. It's just a name, what's the problem of them knowing?
