Reality is a tapestry hanging in the Hall of Eternity, designed by the Mother of All and weaved by the Three Fates. In the beginning, the patterns and designs created a harmonious world where the inhabitants lived in peace, but the structure of the tapestry was flawed, with the back side being a gnarled mess of fate-threads and spirit-yarn; creating a shattered mirror of the front side where life was pain and nothing functioned quite right. Over time, this flaw caused the tapestry to begin to degrade and sections began to go threadbare, allowing this dark-side to come through. To prevent this, crystals were created to repair sections of the tapestry, but they only work as a stopgap and must be constantly renewed.
