Astrolabe of Ancients

"The Star of Despair" Once, long ago before the Age of Kings, an easifan queen believed they had told every story there was to tell, and that every inch of land had been scoured. The wisest amongst them proclaimed that the stars themselves held countless stories beyond memory as they have been watching since the creation of the world. And so, the queen of that era set her people to work, the grandest elders from across the dunes wandered at her call. For three lifetimes they meticulously crafted a device to read into the history of the stars above, and for three more they attuned it perfectly. Eras long after the queen had fallen, her wish had been fulfilled. A new queen had been decided, and so she would peer into the mysteries of the universe.   Gazing upon the glory of the planes, she found words of pure water, floating islands, living mountains, and more. What she had not expected, were the horrors lurking in the darkness of the sky. A star bestowed upon her ancient knowledge of a horrible landscape bereft of life, with monstrous beings beyond description. The creatures seemed to know of her observation, as they gazed deep into the queen's soul and found her unworthy of their secrets. Their hunger growing, they consumed the queen's mind, leaving her a mortal husk. Confused and terrified, the scholars broke apart the astrolabe, its knowledge never to be seen nor spoken again.   The pieces were scattered across the land, in ancient tombs under mountains of yore, atop which new tombs would be built to further conceal the horrors. The tale was never transcribed, only spoken of by ancient lore keepers, to ensure that the memory was never forgotten, but the evils remained buried for all time.
