Bunyips

Bunyips are found across Britain. They are thought to have originated when British prisoners intended to colonise Australia, escaped and died of exposure on the moors. The tormented spirits transformed into bloodthirsty bunyips, lying in wait in waterlogged fields and feeding on passers by.    A bunyip looks something like an over-large sloth. It has khaki coloured fur tinged green by the grassy water. It has the tusk-like teeth of a sabertoothed cat and the foul breath of a seacow.    Bunyips have excellent night vision but struggle to see in the sunlight. Its eyes are a soft, luminous orange.  It uses its gaze to hypnotise and lure it's prey into its watering hole, where it will drown and then devour them. It can also raise and lower the water level, provided there is some water to start with, or some left behind. If cornered, it will wrap its attacker in a crushing hug and squeeze until they are unconscious or dead. No one has survived the hug of death in recorded history, though several have broken out of its hypnotic gaze and saved themselves a watery death. The bunyip's roar is terrifying and can stupefy prey. It functions much like a sonic boom and is only present in females. Bunyips also have one huge, curved claw, usually on a front leg, but sometimes on a back leg. This claw is perfectly designed for disembowelling. The paw the claw is found on is called the dominant paw. One bunyip was found with two dominant paws.    The first sign of bunyips in an area is a worrying absence of frogs. Frog populations will massively decrease and quickly vanish altogether if bunyips are present. Usually they have all been eaten, especially the frogspawn, but sometimes they have had time to scarper. Toad populations, on the other hand, will thrive. There are no frogs to use the space and resources and they use bunyip fur in their nests.  The Fantasma-approved method of removing bunyips is to first establish how many bunyips there are. Are there breeding females, babies, and the much more dangerous older female bunyips? A thorough survey of patches of water and frog and toad populations is always the first step. Watering holes are not considered dangerous in daylight. The most dangerous time to collect water samples is dusk, when you are likely to wake up a sleeping bunyip who will be furious.
