Baron Ridge

Baron Ridge is fortunate to have the only trade route into the upper mountiains. This unlikely city sits atop a steep cliff, adjacent to the river. Sturdy wooden cranes sit atop the cliffs, lifting cargo into the city and beyond around the mountains. All the riches bound for higher altitudes must pass through Baron Ridge. It is said one can find almost anything among the shops there.

Events   Rockford and Dockford were under orders not to drink ale if they were piloting the ship. Perhaps deliberately, they anchored at Baron Ridge, not Garrenbridge. Now that the ship was docked, Rockford and Dockford drank so much that they needed to sober up to continue. Since only ships with official business could use the docks under the cliffs/cranes, Rock n Dock parked the Shut Up Idiot at the end of a winding path downhill from the town. Deciding to kill time in the town, the party heads up the path in time to find an aristocrat's carriage surrounded by dead bodies. The final bodyguard and ambusher slay each other in plain sight of the party, leaving only the Baron of Baron Ridge standing.   Summarily, the party escorts the Baron to his estate and are drawn into a string of errands. The Baron offers an exorbitant 600 gold (each!) to retrieive a priceless necklace that only one merchant in town has. That merchant, Belch the goblin, made the necklace and thinks it is so beautiful he will not sell it, will not even wear it! Belch will trade the necklace for the necessary materials to create a newer, better necklace... Which leads the party to the local mines. The party enters the mine to find wreckage and debris everywhere, but an unblocked tunnel leads to a large, wet underground cavern. Here, a Bulette has made its den. Once the creature is defeated, members of the party dive to the bottom of an icy underground lake and recover a few pieces of adra gemstone.   On the way out of the mine, the party are stopped by guards. One by one, they are inspected by the owner of the mine and a hunter who informs them that none of them are a Doppelganger. The carriage ambush that the party witnessed was actually an attempt to capture the elusive shapeshifter. About this time, the town fire bells begin ringing. The cranes that are the lifeblood of the mountains have been set on fire! Catching a glimpse of a suspicious character, Qalirin gives chase and nearly stops the culprit leaving the scene of the crime while the rest of the party helps put out the fire. Qalirin watches as the one responsible for the fires suddenly becomes a minotaur, which Qalirin fights to a standstill single-handedly.   The now-exposed Doppelganger barely escapes by taking a humanoid form and running into a panicked crowd. The fires are put out and the party take time to recover from their escapades at Belch's shop. While there, they trade materials for the adra necklace, and Don Loxo detects a familiar scent. Asking Belch who visited the shop that day, the party draws a connection between the scent and the man running from the crane fires. Don first smelled this guy at the Baron's Fort. Heading there, the fort is mysteriously empty except for the Baron and his right hand man, Admiral Nelson. Trusting Don Loxo's nose, the Baron seems to be the Doppelganger and the battle is over quickly. Admiral Nelson spills the whole evil plan to the party: In Baron Ridge, coin is king. The wealthiest hold the most political power, and Admiral Nelson planned to become the wealthiest of all by destroying the value of the town's industries then buying them up.   As a thank you for solving the mine dilemma and defeating the shapeshifter, Steen offers the party 300 gold. When they refuse the money, Steen offers to invest it back into his mine and pay them the interest if they meet again. The owner of the docks replenish the ship Shut Up Idiot's provisions as a show of gratitude before the heroes board their vessel and sail upriver for their original destination.
