Session 1
The Triboar Trail: A vital but dangerous trade route connecting the High Road to the interior. It is currently plagued by banditry and goblinoid raids.
Neverwinter Wood: A vast, primordial forest that borders the trail. It is rumored to be home to ancient ruins and restless spirits, now increasingly infested by the Cragmaw Goblin Tribe.
Fandalin: A frontier town built on the ruins of a much older settlement. It is a rough-and-tumble community of miners, farmers, and prospectors looking to strike it rich, though it lacks a formal government or strong law enforcement.
Centuries ago, a pact between clans of dwarves and gnomes (the Phandelver's Pact) led to the creation of the Forge of Spells within the Wave Echo Cave. This mine was a source of incredible magical power until an alliance of drow and orcs laid waste to the region, causing the mine’s location to be lost to history... until now.
Source of notes
The frontier of the Sword Coast North is a land defined by its isolation and the rugged determination of those who seek to rebuild among the ruins of the past. Fandalin stands as a prime example of this struggle, a settlement that was once a thriving center of trade and industry before it was reduced to rubble by marauding orc hordes centuries ago. Today, the town is a collection of makeshift wooden structures built directly upon the sturdy stone foundations of a much older civilization, representing a fragile hope that the prosperity of the Phandelver Pact might one day return to the region.
The surrounding wilderness of the Neverwinter Wood remains a constant threat to this budding community, as the ancient forest is home to aggressive tribes and forgotten magic that does not take kindly to the encroachment of civilization. The Triboar Trail serves as the only lifeline for Fandalin, yet this vital trade route is increasingly besieged by the Cragmaw goblins who have abandoned their typical disorganized raids in favor of a coordinated campaign of terror. This shift in goblin behavior points to a larger and more sinister intelligence guiding their movements from the shadows, ensuring that any news of the lost mines remains suppressed.
At the heart of the local legends is the Wave Echo Cave, a site of immense power where gnomes and dwarves once forged enchanted items of incredible potency. The Forge of Spells within that cave is the ultimate prize for any faction seeking to dominate the North, as its rediscovery would provide the means to arm an entire legion with magical weaponry. The Black Spider has recognized this potential and is systematically eliminating anyone who possesses the knowledge or maps required to locate the entrance. By capturing the Rockseeker brothers, this mysterious mastermind has effectively cut off the town from its history and its future.
The atmosphere in Fandalin is one of guarded optimism constantly threatened by an undercurrent of fear. Without a formal militia or a standing government to protect them, the common folk must rely on the strength of traveling sellswords and adventurers to keep the darkness at bay. Every abandoned ruins and overgrown path in the foothills of the Sword Mountains holds the potential for either great wealth or a sudden death, and the stakes of the current conflict extend far beyond the borders of a simple mining town. If the Black Spider succeeds in monopolizing the Forge of Spells, the light of civilization in this corner of the world may be extinguished for another thousand years.
