War has consumed the world of Magnella for two hundred and sixty-nine years. With that ceaseless longevity, however, warfare is now an uncommon occurrence. In the fractured and long-obsolete country of Magnesa, government is nonexistent. Institutions of every kind have been toppled. But lawlessness does not reign. Instead, self-sustaining and fiercely partisan legions called scutums have taken shape in the loss of government. Man has lost much and fallen hard as a consequence of this war, known only as
the War, sometimes the Cold War to reflect the isolation of mankind from each other, and from his immortal foe: Sin the Tyrant.
Sin is the sole reason for the War's existence. During his so-called reign of terror, all the world of Magnella was yoked to his downtrodden tyranny. How long it lasted is beyond memory; when it began is beyond memory. But said reign ended with the War. Although Sin the Tyrant is man's immortal foe, no one has ever laid eyes upon him. None even know where he lives. In Magnesa, its tribal denizens have ever only known him as so: an ancient, malevolent man with seven fingers on a single hand. That is the face of their Tyrant––the bearer of all their suffering, the thief of their self-evident rights as freeborn people.
However, there is one among them who knows the true identity of Sin the Tyrant. Because he was created by him––or so Magnesans swear by. This individual is known by the moniker
Mortem Ex, which is oft translated to "without death," because he's lived for centuries like his Maker. But this
Mortem Ex resembles man to the T. Perhaps he is human, albeit with enhanced strength and skin finished with a gloss. There are other qualities that separate him from his human counterparts, but none stick out with as much glare as his Maker. He is despised because of this association. Nevertheless,
Mortem Ex is all but untouchable; indestructible too, or so it does appear.
This one man has endured longer than the War itself. He is King to one of the few remaining scutums that roam the "Noble" North: that is, the north of Magnesa. As King he is practically secure from death, partly because of the sanctity of his position, and wholly because of who he is and the tall tales that encrust his personage. But for
Mortem Ex that offers mite comfort. There can be no comfort when the Truth, that terrible truth he knows about humanity's immortal foe, eats at him. He has to let it out. He
must for his sanity's sake.
So he will. But only for those whom he loves, only they are worthy. Still, he cannot just tell them, no, he must
show them. They wouldn't believe him otherwise. They'd say he had lost his mind, gone Insane; for the Truth is that unbelievable: in direct conflict with humankind's perceived reality. The Truth would upset the very purpose of the War against Sin.
It is
Mortem Ex's companions who will be
blessed, as he would argue, with that terrible truth. But there are two sides to every coin, are there not? What one calls blessed, the other would decry as cursed.

Fall of Sin, not to mention a map. I will be adding to this site where appropriate, but the best way to stay up-to-date with this series is, of course, via the books. I do hope you stick around to see what comes next. : )
