Falkenstein

Falkenstein is a remote continent on the planet of Toril in the universe of the Forgotten Realms. It is wild and largely unexplored, with only the temperate region south of the imposing Skala Range inhabited by organized societies. A divine intervention on a continental scale thousands of years ago eradicated the ancient Dwarven society which lived on this landmass, and left in its wake a land teeming with unnatural and powerful beasts and monsters. The cities that do stand here are heavily fortified, and travel between them is perilous in the best of times.   The innate danger of the continent has not stopped civilization from flourishing, however. From behind their thick stone walls, the people of the many independent city-states of Falkenstein organize sophisticated networks of production, trade, and communication. Mercenaries are paid for by city governments and merchant guilds to patrol the edges of the Skala Range, from where most of the monsters seem to originate.
