Session 4

General Summary

Last session began with the party gathered at the southern edge of Phandalin, having just returned to town after killing the Umber Hulk at Shadestone Mine. Hauling one cart loaded with ore and another loaded with the head of the Umber Hulk, you made your way to the Miner’s Exchange to speak with Halia and collect your reward. Satisfied with your work, Halia paid you 25 GP each for killing the creature, as well as 280 GP for the cart of ore.   After collecting your reward, you stopped at the Lionshield Coster of Phandalin in search of better armor for Wellington. There you met Linene and Tharen Greywind, the half-elven siblings who manage the shop. Linene apologized for not having many items in stock, including the studded leather armor that you sought. She explained that two shipments of goods, one from Neverwinter and one from Waterdeep, recently did not arrive in Phandalin when expected. Linene attributed the delay to the raids on the Highroad and the Triboar Trail. She then told you that the shipment from Waterdeep would have contained a few sets of studded leather armor and that it would have passed through the town of Leilon on its way from Waterdeep to Phandalin. If you're interested in purchasing a set of such armor, Linene suggested that you inquire about the shipment at the Lionshield Coster of Leilon. She then offered to pay you 50 GP if you returned to update her on the status of the shipment.   After leaving the Lionshield Coster, you decided to head to Edermath Orchard to speak with Wellington’s friend Grista. However, as you made your way through town, Fea and Althea noticed a cloaked figure following your group. Fea turned and confronted the individual, a dwarven man, who asked whether you were affiliated with the Redbrands before revealing himself to be Tharden Rockseeker, one of Gundren’s brothers. Tharden said that he learned about your arrival in Phandalin from Elmar Barthen, who believed that you knew more about Gundren’s delay than you let on. Tharden explained that he followed you in hopes of finding out who you were and what might have happened to his brother. When you asked why he did not confront you directly, Tharden said that he was concerned you may be allied with the Redbrands, who have evidently been asking around town about Gundren. Tharden said he doesn't know why the Redbrands are interested in his brother, but he has become suspicious of their intentions and did not want to reveal himself to you if you were friendly with the mercenary group.   You then told Tharden about the horses you found dead on the Triboar, your encounters with the goblins, and the cave you discovered at the end of the game trail. Convinced that Gundren fell victim to a goblin ambush, Tharden offered to pay you 200 GP if you agreed to return to the cave and search for his brother. After you accepted his offer, Tharden paid you 100 GP in advance and promised to pay you the remainder when you returned to Phandalin. Tharden asked that you inform Toblen Stonehill when you return to town and said that he would then find you at the Stonehill Inn.   The following morning, you traveled back to the cave. While exploring the interior, you encountered the remaining wolf still chained to the wall, a set of traps designed to flush out intruders, and a narrow passageway leading up to a small goblin encampment. You launched a surprise attack against a group of goblins, three of whom soon lay dead at your feet. Another goblin then appeared at the top of a stone ledge on the south side of the chamber and called for everyone to stop. As you looked up, you saw that this goblin was holding a dagger to the throat of a bound and bloodied human man, a man you all recognized as Sildar Hallwinter.
