Merai

Merai, also known as the Free City, is a small island nation located off the coast of Ashar. The island is known for its unique culture and its heavy influence on regional trade. As one of the most prominent ports in the region, Merai has developed a thriving economy based on its strategic location and exotic exports.
The people of Merai are avid worshipers of the God of the Sea, Atlas, and his Aspects, Sar and Krakas. They are excellent sailors, and many merchants have their permanent residences located in Merai. These merchants, in fact, also define the government of Merai, which is ruled by a council of the seven most prominent merchants in the city, known as the Conclave of the Dunes. The council is known for its pragmatic and business-minded approach to governance, and its members are highly respected and influential figures in the island's society. They are also known for their ability to make quick and effective decisions and to adapt to the ever-changing world of trade and international relations.
Furthermore, the island is also known for its mysterious ancient ruins. Some say that the ruins date back to the time of the first settlers and they believe they hold powerful magic, and many locals believe they hold the key to the island's prosperity. As a result, these ruins are protected by the local people, who often visit the ruins as a pilgrimage site to pray for blessings from the Sea gods.
Besides being a convenient port, Merai has several unique exports. The island is home to skilled artisans who specialize in crafting intricate and colorful fabrics that are highly sought after by traders and merchants from all over the world. These textiles are made from a variety of natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, and are often adorned with intricate patterns and designs that reflect the island's desert culture. Additionally, the spices created by the people or Merai are highly desirable and are priced at a premium. In fact, its signature spice, Siren’s Dust, is said to enhance the flavors of any dish it is added to, with some saying it even produces a hypnotic effect. In some areas of the world, this spice goes for more than adamantine.
Merai has favorable trading contracts with almost every kingdom on the eastern seaboard of Avryn, including Xerian, Charn, Ashar, Osfora, and Telheiros. They have even been known to send their ships east to trade to gain access to Ithria and Korsar. However, Merai is strictly opposed to the Araxian Empire, and has refused to engage in trade with it in recent years, a fact that enrages the current emperor. However, with the ever-changing members of the Conclave of the Dunes, it is unknown how long this policy will actually remain in effect.
