session 6 - Hidden Objectives and Roaring Thunder
7-11-20

As i woke up, i noticed Dormund sitting there, still asleep. the others were all there, except for Cassius. We all had a short conversation about our next steps. heading towards Nichodranos and getting some form of travel was our first priority, besides keeping the beacon safe. our second objective, well.. my second objective was to bring that priest to justice. Father Ronan had sent a nobleman to his death. full well knowing what would happen and without any consideration for his life. to make matters worse. he is also responsible for many more deaths of the peasants of Nichodranos. Justice will be had. vengenace will be executed.   We stepped out of the cavern, and found a young man standing there, scared out of his wits. He held up a stone to his ear, and said we arrived. that we had the object with us and then promptly shot himself in the head with a boomstick. We found a note on his body. telling Dormund and I to bring the beacon to Zadash and deliver it to The Gentleman. It seems the gods were playing a sick joke, it was time to pay our dues.   Without much else to do, we started our travels towards nichodranos. this time, the travel took more time than before. strange magics might be in place in this region. We traveled and made our way through vines, over a river. one of the nights, during a large thunderstorm, Al'Akir walked into the darkness and we didnt see him till we found him unconcious on the ground. he didnt say much, only that he had failed whatever challenge was laid before him.   We eventually made our way to the city, and i decided we should head to a fancy Inn, some place with a bath. It would also offer more security for the beacon. That night, we decided to head to the church, as Talis had fallen ill. conventional healing magic didnt do much.. so we hoped to trick Ronan into helping us before he met his fate. A young man opened the church doors, and told us Ronan was gone. he had left, and left the church behind. The young man gave Talis some potions, hoping they would help. but couldnt help beyond that.   It was late, so we did not have a choice but to rest and take care of the disease that had befallen Talis come morning.   Before heading to bed, i decided to cast Sending to speak to Father Ronan. I told him he could run.. but his fate was set in stone. He replied he would await us at 'the evening nip'. The hiding hole of the Gentleman.. This complicates things dearly.

Session one - Humble Beginnings
3-10-2020

Today was the beginning of my journey to the cobalt soul library in Daestok. I met with Knight-Captain Ulrich at the gates of Zadash and found some friends among my collegues. Tallis and Dormund was there. I also did not expect to see Cassius there. He changed his name for some reason.. best not to pry. There was also a Dragonborn among them; big lad that one, could easily throw me two stories high. he doesnt say much, but seems to handle himself well. Ulrich did not explain much, only that there was danger ahead. We traveled the Bromkiln Byway and met a farmer with a broken wagon. The dragonborn, Al'Akir (thats gonna be hard to pronounce.. i must find a suitable nickname.. perhaps Al?) and i lifted up the wagon as the farmer put the wheel back in place. he gave us some produce for helping him, i hope he made it to Zadash. bountiful harvest to him.   We made camp, uneventful rest. In the morning we went back upon the road and made quite some headway. during the night however, as we were resting; Goblin marks were found by Tallis, keen eyes that one. We had not seen any other traces of them, so quickly got back on the road in the morning. Two fallen logs in the middle of the road; an ambush. Several goblins, some ogre or orcs and two magically inclined humanoids. We all fought bravely and managed to dispatch the foes. Tallis and i tried to capture the two spell casters. they were strange creatures. Glowing eyes, silver beads. a sulken face with a deep blue complexion. when we had him cornered.. he killed himself. i say he, but quite frankly, i dont know if those things have genders. they are unlike any other being i had laid eyes upon. Ulrich got roughed up pretty badly, but we managed to win. i even insulted a goblin to death. good times.   We made camp one last time nearby Daestok. two merchants came in the night, wanting to share our fire. sadly, all we had left were embers; the others were asleep. i invited them to camp close by, safety in numbers and all that. They left in the morning before we really had a chance to properly meet. We then made our way to Daestok and received entry through the gates. some people were staring at Al, i hope he was not offended. this will be the first time they see one of the fallen Dragonborn people up close.   Apparently, Drez Vandrel did not want a library.. so he had the place turned into a bar. its still under construction, but im afraid i'll be drawn to the vices. we met with the man, and he was not what i had heard. he was fair, and expecting. previous titles didnt mean anything to this man. he only cared for the future. its a brave thing in this world of ours.   He and Ulrich explained our job. track weird occurrences and find out what makes them tick. three such items were known at this junction in time. Pride's Call has had its river dried up. the draught has caused a scarcity of water, which in turn threatens to uproot the whole economy in the place. apparently the empire is not doing much; treating symptoms, but not the root cause. the second item on the list was a city in the menagerie coast. Gwarden, of its 20000 inhabitants, none have died in the last few months. this is certainly curious, but hardly as pressing as the other two occurrences. then there were the earthquakes in Nicodranas. the clovis concord is apparently downplaying the danger, but the actions of the tidal priests are clear. there is danger there.   For the moment, we decided to head to Nicodranas first. if the earthquakes spread, many more can get hurt. we were then planning to head to Pride's call and finally Gwarden.   We then headed for some dinner and went to bed. in the morning, a friend of Drez would help us get near our objective.

Session two - Nichodranas Rumble
10-10-20

Our day began with a druidic friend of drez, who casted a spell through which he summoned a portal to another place in a tree. quite a magic feat, i'll have to have him teach me that.   We stepped through the portal and blinked, before us was the blue paradise ocean near nichodranas. We did a quick walk over the beach, which lifted our spirits after those damned goblin assasins. Reaching the city, we quickly headed over to a bar, the withered bitch inn, the weathered bird inn, we're still not clear on what the crude sign says. I naturally did a little performance to get some quick coin and put people in a good mood. I believe i saw Tallis up to her old tricks once again, as several patrons were missing some coin. I spoke with some orcs, who apparently just made it to the city. i had scared them slightly with talk of the tremmors.. Some people were gambling, i joined the table and after raising the stakes won the game in one round. they were slightly suspicious.. but a hero does not have need for petty coin. i offered to give it all back and then some, for information about the tremmors. Apparently the city has been sending tide priests to bless the land and sea, hoping for the quakes to stop.   Al'akir found information about a woman who kept ranting that her husband had disapperead.. apparently around the time the tremors started. she apparently wanted people to look into the disappearance and a nearby mine.   Cassius, Dormund and i headed into the city to look for a priest, hoping to get more information. This is where we met father Ronan. he wanted us to do him a favour, to go to a mine and check in on some friends of his in the mountains. many poor people had not returned from a job assisting a prospector. apparently a new mining site was found, around the same time as the tremors started happening.   Al'Akir spoke to the woman, apparently, father Ronan was the man responsible for the many job offers.. he lied to us in our face, but we don't yet have evidence of this for the guards. he's on the shitlist.   We then spent the night at the Pickled turnip tavern, where im pretty sure Billy stole from Tallis. Cassius used magic freely in a somewhat crowded bar.. he got many nasty looks. i spoke to him about his free use of magic, and cautioned him against the prejudice surrounding magic. he said he already knew.. but i should keep an eye nontheless.   Early in the morning, we headed to a man named Murice the dwarf, a man with many tales of islands, jungles and the sea. i asked him to be our guide into the jungle.. but the man was asking a LOT of cash for his services. I decided we were better off on our own, with our money safely in our pockets. We headed into the jungle, which actually went quite quickly. At night, we were ambushed by some four legged scaled creatures.. incedentilly.. i had just joked about large lizards with big fangs to Dormund.. i'll have to convince him im in fact not able to see the future.   We made it further through the jungle, and finally found the mine we were told to seek out..   Before we could investigate, we were spotted. i bluffed my way into the walled off camp, but did not have enough information to get us some safety in it.. we were ushered into the mine at boomstickpoint. Three large openings, each warded by three arcane sigils. The first room we found ourselves into is where we found mining equipment and a note in some unknown elven texts. i casted a casual spell, allowing me to read the text. it spoke of the blood of the faithful to break the wards, a beacon, and the luxon.

Session three - Into the dephts
17-10-20

After reading the note on the previous page, we headed deeper into the mines; starting our journey.   After a short while, we found some traps that were already made safe. Tallis salvaged some gunpowder. After another short while of walking, we found a caved in part of the tunnel, with a 5 foot sized hole in its shadows. At the bottom, we found a humanoid, ripped to pieces.. With some quick thinking, Cassius sent his magical familiar into the dark below, which instantly got cut to pieces. Al'Akir obviously believed it was a good idea to throw dynamite in there.. it hurt some of the creatures, and the skittered away. We made a quick pulley system using my box and tackle and Tallis' rope to leverage Al'akir into the hole. as he went down, the creatures came back in a frenzy. we tried to pull Al back up, but he snapped the rope on his own. I'll have to have a talk about resource management with him. after a quick fight, we won and we all went into the hole. There, on the corpse we found another note. it spoke of the miners, who were all dead and the barricades they had made. they all pointed inwards, rather than out, indicating they were trying to keep something in, not out. Hoping to find magical items, Cassius cast a spell to detect magic. sadly he did not find anything beyond what we had on our persons.   We went deeper into the natural tunnels till we heard noises. Tallis found it wise to scout ahead, and disappeared for quite a while. When she came back she led us deeper into the caverns through a somewhat safe route. we found a donut shaped chamber with another caved in part of the wall indicating an old entrance. Unable to find something here, we tried some different paths but were interrupted by an incredibly large version of the monsters we had previously fought.. we all froze.. as did it. i found out after the fact that it was listening for vibrations in the ground.. looking for a hunt. Tallis threw a rock, and it went into a frenzy trying to get to it, almost stabbing Tallis and I in the process. We quickly made our way deeper into the caverns and after turning a corner, three javalins found purchase on Tallis' body. Three pale white dwarves, deep dwarves or how ever they like to be called, attacked us without reason. We quickly fought back, and as the first one fell, my worst nightmare came true. Its skull busted open and out came a brain with limbs. it latched itself onto Al'Akir, and did something to him. he fell into a catatonic state, even though we killed the thing. Two more skulls busted out of the heads of these dwarves and we only barely managed to dispatch them. We needed a safe space, any safe space at all. Tallis found a small nook in the wall, where we quickly pulled Al'akir to. there was a body there.. a dark elf, A filthy krik. Two dwarves came from the entrance while muttering something. i listened closely and could only make out a few words. Ancient, Feeding.. symbiote. not the kind of church rhymes i was brought up on i'll tell you that! We inspected the corpse, and found a note. it said the following.   Illithid below   Has the Beacon. Desecrating it.   Something lies beyond It's hungry   I was not 100% sure i had all of it correctly, as the page was drenched in blood. Cassius did another quick magical sonar spell and found two magic items.   Two dwarves once more returned, and dragged the last of the bodies back. still muttering the same verse, i now caught what they said. Hail the devourer, the end of the light. Come forth, hungerer. Praise the ancient, the Feeding, the Symbiote.   Yea.. this expedition just went from 70 to 100% creepy. Dormund and cassius used their magics to identify the items; A cloak with the power of owl feathers. and a black candle, making you capable of speaking to the dead.   I quickly deviced a plan to speak with the fallen Krik. I cast a spell upon myself; changing my appearance to that of a Krik and then used the candle. I asked who killed it .. - The grell killed me I asked what is causing the earthquakes.. - the beast beyond the gate. How many illithid were below? - 1 illithid Our friend was attacked by the brain monsters.. how do we help him? - Magic of the light, or extended sleep. For the last question, i made a gambit. How do we undesecrate our beacon? - Remove it from the ritual, take it to safety.. let it rest.   We decided we were all spent for the day, having effectively not slept for a day. we needed a rest, even if it brought us danger in this unknown darkness.

Session 4 - The Fall, The Save and the Centipede.
24-10-20

I fell asleep and was instantly tormented by terrible dreams. I saw my beautifully enchanting wife, Guinnevere. I looked into her beautiful eyes and was overcome by dread as her skull split open and a mindsucker bursted from her now open skull. It chased me for longer i thought possible. its fair to say i was not rested when i woke up.   We headed further down, ledge after ledge untill a strange magic filled the space. it was as if gravity was off, i felt almost weightless. When we made it down to the bottom, we saw a large castle type of construction across from a broken bridge. at the middle of the bridge was what i surmise to be a Grell. We attacked it at a distance, it seemed to not want to chase us. it was killed within a few seconds; something strange is going on. I stepped upon the bridge and felt myself in a daze. i wanted to jump off into the depths below. Luckily, Talis saved me from certain death. What i saw at the bottom of the ravine however.. that will haunt me forever more. A Gigantic centipede like creature, beyond anything in the realm of sanity. thousands of skittering legs, each as big as a guardtower. We now knew a spell was put on the bridge, so we were careful and stepped on the bridge one at a time. this way, we managed to save a few from falling down. We jumped the broken bit of the bridge, and when i looked back, both Dormund and Talis were gone. i looked into the dephts.. but no trace of them. I almost decided to jump down myself to save them if possible.. but Cassius had casted 'detect magic' as he likes to call it. it showed the large castle walls to be an illusion. i peeked through and saw both Talis and Dormund, Suspended in the air near a dodecahedron of some kind. I had to hope, nay, wish that removing that object would free Talis and Dormund. if they kept suspended.. we were doomed as right behind it stood a humanoid, lifting up a large Kruthick with magic, siphoning its blood into a void of some kind. I knew we had but moments, so told Al'akir and Cassius to give me 30 seconds, before causing a diversion. I snuck into the illusion once more and made my way as close as i could. At the 30 second mark, the other two stepped into the room which alerted the creature standing near the void. As if on command, a large earthquake shook the world around us as a gigantic tentacle creature tried to pry its way through the void portal into this plane. as the other two made their way up close, Cassius was dragged into the air, closer and closer to the void creature. I quickly sprinted to my friends and lifted the dodecahedron into the air which lifted whatever spell was upon Dormund and Talis. i quickly tossed the dodecahedron to talis and told her to run. to get that thing out of here. due to the lack of other prominent items.. i believed it to be the beacon.   The humanoid creature had in the meantime turned around and i saw it was a nightmare. An Illithid, mindeater of the depths. a true monster. Combat ensued, cassius was taken closer and closer to the creature, while Al'Akir drew closer. Talis ran as far as her little legs could carry her leaving Dormund and i to fight the Illithid.   The illithid casted a spell and i found myself overcome with fear. i had to get away. And so i did. i dont know what happened to the others as i ran but i was soon out of sight and back at the bridge. i kept running and prepared to take a leap, right as the same sensation as before came over me and i tossed myself into the depths below. I blinked and found myself back where i had just ran from. The others were under attack by some kind of blind humanoids. they creeped me out, and slashed at them. Cassius was freed, Al'akir had made an epic jumping smite attack which brought the Illithid some pain. it seemed like the portal was closing the further the 'beacon' was taken away from it. As a last ditch effort, the tentacle monster started to pull Al'Akir to it. Dormund made some sort of prayer to his god, Ioun and tied a rope that was thrown by Al'Akir around some rocks. in a true divine burst of strength, Dormund pulled Al'Akir free. I swear i saw the rope emit light for a second.   The ilithid was clearly fed up with us and drew closer to the tentacle creature. In a burst of nothingness, they disappeared. Two red glowing eyes loomed in the void.. which quickly disappeared. i believe we may have made an enemy doing what we've done. but thats not important, not at this time. We hurried and killed the blind creatures, i even managed to kill one by telling it 'your eyes are truly beautiful.. radiant.. if only the rest of you was like that. you know.. not existent.' which was kind of fun for me in these dire circumstances.

Session 5 - Rise into Sanity, Loss of consciousness.
31-10-20

We ran out of the illusionary walls and saw several more Grell with pale dwarves hanging on their tentacles. we did not have much time. What happened next can only be described as unwise and excruciating. We kept on wanting to fall off into the depths below as we touched the bridge's stonework, which teleported us back into the room we just came from. the Grell and pale dwarves kept coming closer and closer as Al'Akir made it over the bridge first. he waited, and as i made my way over there he left. I quickly followed and started to climb up. We must have climbed for a good while before i could have one last glimpse at the bridge. Cassius and Dormund were still there.. still not passing the bridge. I had nothing to help them with and made the traumatizing decision to leave them. i hoped they were able to make it back, but waiting was suicide. As i climbed higher i started to hear noise. the sound of Kruthicks, an explosion and skittering headed my way. I saw several Kruthicks run up to me and promptly pushed myself to the wall.. they were there, skittering and making their noises. i threw some ball-bearing down the ledges which noise startled them, causing some of them to run away. i carefully made my way past them, and slowly made my way back to the hole we had at one time come from. on the way there, i made a mistake and found myself under attack by a Kruthick and promptly started running to my friends who were currently keeping a swarm of Kruthiks at bay. I quickly joined them and tried to join Talis above the tunnel i was in, but as i did i was attacked and could not make it up. i decided to join Al'akir in his stand against the Kruthiks. we fought back to back and told the rest i could collapse the tunnel. they agreed with my assessment to wait another 15 seconds for others to arrive. the seconds passed and i started to cast my Shatter spell. As i doubted myself for a second and hesitated casting the spell, i was attacked by a Kruthick. Its attack hit me hard and i fell unconscious.   I woke up several hours later in silence. I was in the room above and the tunnel was blocked off. I looked around and saw Talis and Al'Akir. Hurt, but safe. To my surprise and guilt, i also saw Dormund. I can not imagine what would have happened if i had casted that spell. He would have been stuck there, and i would effectively have killed my good friend. Sadly, there was no sign of Cassius.   The others woke up and Dormund told me Cassius didn't make it, he saved Dormund's life and in the process doomed himself. A noble has died, a sad occasion. i may not have known him long nor well. but he was a friend and companion as well as a fellow noble. This is the priests fault.. he sent those without money here on a fools errand he know would lead to their deaths. He lied to us, got us to find out what happened to the peasants. Every action has a consequence. i will see to it his has a severe one.   First things first however, we need to get out of this place; i hope the blood i collected from that Krik will do what i hope it will.   I am angry and have the power to do something about it.
