The Purgers

Against the Puritan abhorrence of deviance rose the annealed hatred of the Purgers; a rebel organisation turned military dedicated to eradicate the only real deviance from nature: the Source.

Public Agenda

To gain control of the world, to eradicate sorcery and demons, in order to create a better world.

History

The Purgers began as political rebels in Darangar known as Renserne (the Cleansers). Their uprising  against the Puritans was abrupt and their victory a year later was unexpected. Word of their success spread and people flocked to join their cause, citing "Purge the Pure". The Puritans denounced them as mutilators of Source, using enslaved demons to fly on the wind and pass through walls, which temporarily hurt their recruitment. It was perhaps because of this misinformation that the Purgers turned against demons as well as sorcerers.   Many of the deviances which the Purgers engaged in became their strength. They had no nobility and no reservations about who did what as long as they were all moving toward the same target. Traditional gender roles and relationship ideals were abolished. The function of a thing became higher in value than its beauty. Taboos were lifted on sexuality and individual expression. While sorcery was outlawed the clinical study of it was encouraged, the knowledge over which became the root of their power.   The Purge Era began with their first attack  on a territory of demons known as the Ogre Lands a century later, known as the First Demon War. Their goal? To free the continent from Source. The land of Ogarna remained in intermitted conflict until the Fall of Utopia 650 years later. During that time the Purgers never held more than two thirds of the land yet had the time to convert the Black Spire into a habitable watchtower and deplete two iron mines.   Across the known world, they converted more Spires into fortresses. The most famous is the Utopian Tower in Hel which was converted by seafaring Purgers in 280 PE. In the The Purge Covenant it is referred to as the "home" of the Purgers, which is significant as the organisation previously claimed they belonged to no one place.   482 years after the First Demon War began, Mirenerel took action that cut the head of the snake. The Rise of the Storms  severed the connection between the contents. Hundreds of ships with materials, messages and reinforcements disappeared. Communication was cut off and all attempts at passing through the storm ended in failure. The Purgers of Hel never ceased to fight the storms but they were simultaneously hard pressed by the five last standing cities of the Puritans. The The Purge Covenant was composed in a desperate attempt to free resources to pitch against Mirenerel's monsters but in the end it was their own bastardisation of Source that destroyed them.

Disbandment

After the Purgers were divided by Mirenerel's Ire, the Purgers suffered a succession of serious defeats. Their defeat became final at the Fall of Utopia  651 years after their rise.   The exact events are not recorded. It is widely held that a powerful quake broke open the earth and the air in Hel was filled with poisonous gasses. The mountain range of Mikatlan held the gasses contained from the rest of the continent. Water that flows from the range into Fidhern is clean but to this day those rivers and lakes are blamed for many ailments. The people of Fidhern would rather face Mirenerel's Ire than be forced to feed or drink of the cursed waters.
