Elf

Way back before the fey even knew they were supposed to be fey, a goddess called the Everqueen gathered together a bunch of this pre-fey essence and made the elves. Elves in general think this was a Pretty Cool Thing (TM.)   (Except for the drow, but we're not talking about them right now.)

(Aquilian, a high elf from Varentar.)

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves have the same basic body plan as humans, but with sharper features- most notably their elongated, pointy ears. High elves tend to have slightly narrower and more elongated ears than wood elves, while the ears of sea elves are flatter against the sides of their heads.    Unlike other races, elves can alter their reproductive biology more or less at will, thanks to the blessing of their Everqueen. This aside, they are not typically noticeably dimorphic.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves live a ridiculously long time- up to 750 years. Although they physically mature at roughly the same rate as humans, they are not legally considered adults until around 100 years of age. The process by which they declare and maintain this status of adulthood varies from society to society. There is, however, a significant distinction between a 'child' elf, and one who is out of their teens but has not yet claimed full adulthood. While human lives are sectioned into 'childhood' and 'adulthood', elves therefore have a third stage between the two, where a young elf takes on some adult responsibilities but is not yet considered fully mature.    Younger elves have comparatively soft features, which gradually become more angular over their first century and a half of life. It can be difficult for other species to tell how old individual elves are at a glance, given they don't age at all like many other humanoids; with physical angularity and the depth and sharpness of their eyes reflecting age, instead of folds and wrinkles.    Some time after their 700th year, an elf's eyes grow reflective and their skin takes on a dull golden glow. Perhaps this is a final lingering trace of fey heritage.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Elves are given one name by their parents in childhood. As this is replaced at adulthood by a name of the individual's own choosing, common childhood names are drawn from a very short list. Close childhood friends may continue to affectionately use an elf's childhood name into adulthood.

Gender Ideals

Concepts of gender among the elves are loose at best. There are very few elves who would describe themselves strictly as 'men' or 'women'.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Elvish and Common. Many sea elves speak a dialect of Primordial.

Common Etiquette Rules

It is polite to sign your pronouns upfront when conversing in Elvish (or with an elf speaking in another language.)
