Four Sovereign Myth in Ethnis | World Anvil

Four Sovereign

A superstition regarding the possible number of sovereign

Written by Ademal

3, 4, 7, 8, 23, 28...

Superstitions die hard. Even in the face of reason we secretly believe that certain things carry a weight which supplants all other logic. Thake the holy and unholy numbers listed above.

In code these are called magic numbers. Fixed variables on which everything else hinges. The Elements (7), the Triptych and Panel (4), the Subsophontic Counter (24), and Sophontic Counter(28)... the list goes on. We put faith in the mere count of something, and then we see it everywhere.

Even to me, it makes a compelling case.

I was right about humanity gaining a Sovereign. Their sleeping giant has awoken. He calls himself The Somnolent.

I hypothesize that Euphreasthi did not steal the power of the Sovereign. She swore to sunder the crown, not take it, but these days we know it would have taken more than her blade to do so. I believe she was granted Sovereignty for killing the Haimarch, but that the Haimarchy still secretly possesses a Sacred Seal of Sovereignty and are waiting to use it until they reach their new world.

That is a theory I will elaborate on later, however. It's importance here is thus:

  • Kyzan, a Verin, rose as the First Sovereign.
  • Euphreasthi, a Sazashi, rose as the Second Sovereign.
  • The Somnolent, a Human, rose as the Third Sovereign.

Four is an important number throughout Ethnian religions.

Will there be a fourth Sovereign? Where will it come from? If I am right, then by trend it will be a fourth Sophont. If so, who?

I doubt it it will be a Focus. Foci are out of sync with the meta.

Out my window I can see the towers of Warden, Foster, and Anthem. They are Sophontic. No. Sophilectic. Will it be them?

This isn't my first time musing on this, but recent events have aroused superstition. I used to discuss it with Lunathea—Brood. She told me she intended to be one of the four. I shiver, because she marches on Aempis as I write this.

I pray it is Anthem.
