The planet of Valoo is locked in captured rotation to the sun of Valoo, meaning that its rate of rotation does not change during its orbit around the systems stars. One side of the planet always faces the heat, while the other side is permenantly shrouded in darkness.
Habitation of Valoo is only possible on the narrow band between the two sides, where the cold from the frozen side and the heat from the sunbaked side collide into a terraformed valley. Outside of the valley, nothing but endless horizons of wastelands await.
There is nothing for you, or anyone, outside the Valley. It serves a constant reminder of why maintaining our terraformers is as critical as our farms.
The Burning Peaks
On the sun-facing side, jagged peaks have been exposed by brutal solar winds. The pale-red expanse of plains is mineral rich, but is so dangerous to traverse that even the most hardy envirosuits can only last ten minutes before being compromised. The 'sand' of the burning peaks are glass like shards left over from a astral impact. Inhaling can be lethal.
The Frozen Desert
On the other side of the planet, the only light comes from the other planets and moons reflection. The temperatures are too low to support terraformation let alone habitation. The surface is cold enough to collect condense methane into metallic pools in the lower elevations while massive mountain ranges sit frozen in time, encased in a thick layer of ice.
Research and Resources
During the terraformation of Waimana Valley, research facilities were placed on the other side of the wall via tunnels. After the Melancholic Lacuna, and the Cutting of Ark, the facilites were lost to the unforgiving elements.
I bet the planet looks kind of dramatic if you looked at it from space. I would definitely never venture beyond the Valley.
That is very true, a view that very few people have had in recent times.
