Ebonite

Ebonite is a black metal that is rare in many parts of Eveynjar and is sought after to make durable tools, deadly blades, and protective armor. A naturally occurring compound of Titanium and Tungsten, this material is both durable, hard to work, and really heavy.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Appearance-wise, Ebonite looks quite similar to obsidian at first glance, though is much heavier, metallic, and just as hard to work but for different reasons. It requires high heat to work the metal due to the heat tolerance of titanium and tungsten and is almost impossible to melt due to this. The armor and weapons generally made from these last for an eternity due to the durability and tensile strength of the metal. Due to its high density, however, it requires some strength to use and is not for those who are considered weaklings.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Objects made with this metal are easily enchantable, and any object imbued with an enchantment has double the normal potency of the effect. Ebonite also has an affinity for magics of shadow, void, dark, and illusory, so it is often used to cap staves and wands of shadow mages and other magic users.

30-70% Titanium, 30-70% Tungsten

Geology & Geography

Ebonite is most commonly found in Empyria, Hallojar, and Urrudea. Yllithr, Fahliilenjar, and Kalukkenjar have extremely sparse sources of ore.

Origin & Source

Ebonite ore is commonly called Tembrite.

History & Usage

History

Ebonite has been highly sought after throughout history, and any weapons and/or armor made with the stuff is almost always in military use. Recently, adventurers in the Savaboia mountains have found ruins with Ebonite artifacts, suggesting that at least one ancient civilization had access to this rare metal.

Discovery

Ebonite has been in use by blacksmiths since the Metallurgistians. Naalrym himself learned how to use it from another source some 100,000 bp, though evidence in Savaboia proves that the ore has been in use for much longer.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Though the ore is rare, it is seen as a symbol of Empyrean might, and any nation that possesses the stuff guards it.

Refinement

The Tembrite ore it is made from must have the inclusions of stone around it melted away before use of the metal.

Reusability & Recycling

Due to the low oxidation rate of this metal, it is easily reusable. Though due to its hard workability, few possess the knowhow to properly work the metal.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Though Empyria possesses the highest concentration of Ebonite, it seldom actually sells the stuff, Hallojar and Urrudea are the highest producers, and make a significant profit from sales. That beings said, ebonite itself is only seen in governmental use and seldom makes it way to civilian use.

Law & Regulation

Most governments value anyone with the skill to work Ebonite and any who are able to craft with it. In fact, many smiths who work this metal possess governmental statuses, and have privileges others would envy. However, Ebonite is seldom found in civilian use, and in Empyria it is illegal to own Ebony unless you are in the government or military.
