Hades Class Destroyer

A full step above its predecessor the Devil Class Destroyer, the Hades was brought forth from a new wave of scientific innovations, building on the lessons learnt from the previous class.   She was equipped with the state of the art Laser Defence System against close-in targets and as point defence, and was equipped with 16 tubes housing Mark 5 Nuclear Torpedoes. Likewise improvements on the nuclear generator increased her acceleration to 7G. Once again the ship grew in size to accommodate her new weapons and was the first class of ship to feature the trademark oblate spheroid shape of current generation ships.   Equipped with four banks of 4 tubes to port and starboard the ships were originally equipped with Mark 5 Nuclear torpedoes, with another 16 weapons in dorsal and ventral storage areas. This new method of mounting the torpedo bays amidships cleared room for a more sophisticated sensor suite and increased bow point defence systems, but would severely impact the crew's comfort. Access past these bays was achieved through a pair of 70cm diameter vertical hallways running between the two banks of tubes on either side of the ship.   Its armour, like the Devil Class Destroyer before, was 2000mm of layered ceramic composite, but this was an afterthought as the heavy lifting was intended to be done by the 17 point defence lasers on the bow and stern, which could shoot down incoming weapons before they can threaten the vessel.   It was equipped with a new design of jump-drive, situated just forward of the torpedo bays, that would once again be able to spool in under 10 hours. Its sub-light drive was an upgraded xenon propulsion motor powered by its nuclear reactor. Initially able to pull 7G, later modifications would push that to 16G under emergency power.   Three ships were initially commissioned, Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon, although after the successful space trials of the first three another 20 vessels would be ordered. Although Hades would be the first of the class to be laid down she would be the third, after both Zeus and Posiedon, to be completed due to complications in construction of her jump drive.   Hades Class Destroyers would serve with distinction throughout the Orion war, with the destroyer Hecate earning the first ship-kill of the war. They would be superseded by Thunderground Class Cruisers of heavier armament and Rhea Class Destroyers of quicker speed. Two examples of Hades Class Destroyers are kept in operating condition at the Burlington Orbital Shipyard; Hecate remains in her post-war configuration boasting bloated P-II Torpedoes and prominent sensor masts, whilst the Leto has been restored to the original specifications of the Hades design. Both are open to the public as museum-ships, however the vertical hallways leading to the tube bays are blocked off for safety reasons.
