Etena Calendar

Etena operates on a 4 quarter calendar, of 91 days each. The start of the year is 1 Avara, the first day of spring.   Etena's calendar was founded before earliest written records show, however followers of the equipoise believe that the calendar is a balance between the world's three main gods - Neptune, Mora and Rava - and sentient life, each quarter having a season season of prosperity and dominance. Thus, it is believed that the calendar is a representation of a balance between the world's powers, between the gods and the sentients. Many people in the world have accepted this theory to some extent, for lack of a better explanation of the calendar.

Avara Quarter - Spring (equivalent of March, April, May)

  • The Avara quarter often comes just as winter begins to subside, when the land, and its plants and animals begin to flourish and resurge once more. The Avara quarter is often associated with Rava's return to favour, and it is even believed that Rava bestows good fortune on the continent during this time, as this is when vegetation begins to bloom again having survived the cold winter, and consequently when animals become more active as food becomes plentiful again. This season is also associated with the element of stone, due to the rebirth of the land.
  • Enas Quarter - Summer (equivalent of June, July, August)

  • The Enas quarter is viewed as the time of life, and more specifically the time of sentient life, as this quarter is often the most productive. With the warmest weather of the seasons, it gives excellent growing conditions for crops and herbs, and good weather for travel, exploration and outdoor work. Many believe that this season was created so that humanoid life could prosper. This season is also related to the element of fire, due to the hot weather.
  • Roma Quarter - Autumn (equivalent of September, October, November)

  • Roma is the name given to the autumn season in Etena. The Roma quarter is associated with the goddess Mora, and is seen as the transition between the time of sentience and the time of the sea. The warm weather which had blessed the land during the summer fades and the cold returns, believed to be caused by Mora's exertion of dominance over the sky, bringing storms and bad weather. It is believed she does this to make living being pay reverence to her, and many pray to her in the hopes that she will bless them with an extended summer. This season is also associated with the element of wind.
  • Neten Quarter - Winter (equivalent of December, January and February)

  • The coldest of the quarters is named Neten, and associated with the god Neptune, as this season brings rougher seas and cold storms, many of which originate from the outer sea. During this season, the land, normally rife with life, becomes somewhat dormant, as life on the continent hunkers down to weather the winter. Viewed as the most inhospitable season, many believe this is due to Neptune's wrath, reminding all life of his power, and that even those on land are not out of his reach. Expectedly, this season is also associated with the elements of water and ice.
