Kaseni (KAH-seh-knee)

The kaseni is a gargantuan creature when it reaches its full maturity, but even with its giant size, it is quite capable of hiding itself beneath loose ground, and surprising its prey with claws that can batter and grapple.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Appears to be a giant crustacean (crab), often the size of a house, if not larger, when fully grown. Has two large claws which can grapple anything smaller than itself. In addition to these claws it has six limbs with which it can walk or swim with. It is covered in thick chitin, which is hard to pierce.

Genetics and Reproduction

Unknown, believed to reproduce on the elemental plane of water, Synnoria.

Growth Rate & Stages

Little is known about its rate of growth from infancy to adolescence, but from adolescence to adulthood the kaseni grows extremely slowly. It is estimated that it takes ~200 years for an adolescent kaseni to fully mature.   An adolescent begins around the size of a horse, and stops growing when they reach the size of a two story house. During that time they shed their shells once every ~20-50 years, this is a rough estimation as researchers have not been able to follow a single kaseni throughout their lifespan.

Ecology and Habitats

Found mainly between the elemental plane of water (Synnoria) and the waterways of Eshai, though it has been known, rarely, to be found on Mast, the Material Plane.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Diet is primarily meat-based, though they do not need to eat nearly as much as their size recommends, perhaps they also gain sustenance through the magical energy within water itself?   It hunts mainly by hiding in loose sand or soil near waterways (or swamps) and surprising its prey with either a claw or tidal attack. A kaseni always remains near a body of water for a quick getaway, should they actually be threatened.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The kaseni does not seem to have eyes, though it somehow manages to find its prey with ease, within a radius.
