Zakath

Zakath – The Vault of Stone and Flame

box

Population: ~51,000
Primary Inhabitants: Drakmir (65%)
Dominant Function: Shard mining, refining, finance, trade

Carved into the face and heart of a sheer obsidian mountain, Zakath is a sprawling fortress-city of iron lattice bridges, winding mineshafts, pulleys, and deep chasms glowing with fragment magi tech lights. Its economy is built on the Eryndor’s single richest fragment mine. Its a volatile source of magical crystal that fuels weaponry and enchantments across Eryndor. The entire city is vertically arranged: merchant towers and vault halls rise up the cliff face while labor villages and mines dive deep into the roots of the mountain. Fragment carts pulled by elemental-bound constructs glide along suspended tracks, and massive elevators carry goods from the depths to the surface.

Districts

The Vaultspire

Home to the Adamant Hoard, the Dominion’s main treasury. Fortified with enchantments and blacksteel plating, the Vaultspire is where high-value trade, diplomatic exchanges, and national reserves are stored. It also houses the Office of Weights, Bids, and Valor—an administrative branch that sets economic policy for the Dominion.

The Deepcut

The lowest and most dangerous level of the city, where raw shard veins are cut, extracted, and refined. This district is a maze of drill platforms, glowing ore, and thick security. Kobold engineers dominate here, their work precise and relentless. Fires and shardstorms are common occupational hazards.

The Emberfront

The upper urban sprawl of Zakath. This is where wealth flows and trade is constant. Opulent merchant towers, auction houses, gemcutters, and broker guilds dominate the landscape. Displays of magical wealth are common—from enchanted statues to everburning fountains of flame. Corruption is masked by gilded honor.

The Ashlace Warrens

A kobold-majority residential and industrial tier that supports the city’s infrastructure. Its forges and repair halls keep the lift systems running and craft specialized gear for shard extraction. Though many in the Dominion overlook the Warrens, its inventors and riggers are indispensable—and quietly powerful.

Notable Institutions

The Adamant Hoard – Dominion’s primary treasury and vault complex. Every city funnels its surplus here under watch of the Scale Bearer and Dominion appraisers.

Fragment Smith Academy – A technical school for kobolds and dragonborn focusing on Fragment refinement, crystal resonance engineering, and mining alchemy.

The Hall of Weighted Words – Court of trade law, contract arbitration, and punishment of economic fraud. Trial by clause is common.

Leadership and Key NPCs

Scale Bearer Myrrik Velthorn – A gold-scaled dragonborn economist and master of trade law. Velthorn wears robes of scale-etched contracts and speaks in layers of price and value. Considered incorruptible in principle, but unshakably ruthless in policy.

Krellit Nine-Ring – A kobold guildmaster of the Shardwright Academy. Known for his golden monocle and tendency to hum in meter while working. Friendly but calculating.

Lazarra Thornebrand – A silver-scaled merchant queen who runs three of the five major broker towers. Famous for funding experimental Fragment-tech weapons which made her wealthy beyong imagining.

Magister Bolth Kegclamp – A blacksmith-turned-bureaucrat who oversees mechanical systems for mine safety and elevator operation. this kobold is all gruff.

Zakath prizes precision, discipline, and profit. Contracts are as sacred as blood pacts. Citizens rise by output and negotiation, not by force. That said, backroom deals, quiet assassinations, and stone-faced rivalries simmer beneath the gold and silver sheen. Kobolds here are treated better than anywhere else in the Dominion—but only if they remain useful.
