Dalath

Dalath – The Heart of Smoke and Spark

Population: ~56,000
Primary Inhabitants: Drakmir (60%),
Dominant Function: Engineering, industrial construction, alchemy, war machinery

Dalath is the Dominion’s underground forge-city, an industrial titan hollowed beneath the mountains and glowing with the heat of invention. It lies within the immense Sky Cavity, a natural cavern over a mile wide and hundreds of feet high. A massive arcane sunlight strip runs along the cavern’s ceiling, mimicking day and night cycles to maintain productivity and regulate the biological rhythms of its inhabitants. The city is constantly alive with clangs, hisses, roars of pressure vents, and the rhythmic chants of coordinated labor. Kobold ingenuity drives its lifeblood—constructs, siege weapons, alchemical fuels, and Dominion-grade armaments all originate here. Dragonborn crews manage heavy machinery and brute-force logistics, while kobolds manage calibration, design, and maintenance. The city is a harmonious tension of genius and pressure.

Districts

The Ironweft

The central factory complex—an overlapping warren of gearhalls, conveyor tunnels, and heat-exchangers. Teams of kobold engineers scramble over massive golem frames while molten alloy is pumped between workshops. Precision is everything, and every piece is stamped with an inventor’s mark. this mark also serves as a brand of responsibility for a devices functionality.

The Emberveil Quarters

Dalath’s residential sector. Built in vertical shafts connected by lifts and zip-lines, this district houses kobold families, low-ranking dragonborn workers, and a rotating caste of apprentice engineers. Glowmoss and ember glass line the walls, lighting homes and workstations with flickering warmth.

The Alkahest Wells

A dangerous chemical district where volatile compounds are mixed, refined, and tested. Specialized alchemists wear reinforced suits and rebreather masks while extracting fuel cores, purifying shard residues, and mixing corrosives for siege-grade munitions. Occasional small explosions are considered “teachable moments.”

The Chain Assembly

A specialized zone of golem assembly yards, siege beast enclosures, and testing tracks. Massive constructs are fitted with Dominion banners and equipped for battlefield roles. Dragonborn squads run tactical drills alongside the machines to simulate real war conditions.

Notable Institutions

The Smokeborn Forgehold – Official state factory where Dominion war machines are refined, tested, and released for military use.

The Coil and Crucible – Dalath’s premier kobold guild academy for engineering and alchemy. Entrance is merit-based, and washouts often lose eyebrows (or limbs).

The Furnace Pact Archives – An underground vault of schematic scrolls and experimental patents. Some designs are sealed under military lock due to prior “incidents.”

Leadership and Key NPCs

Scale Bearer Wratcheth Brightcoil – A white-scaled kobold genius and Dalath’s representative to the Dominion Conclave. Known for his manic focus, constant muttering, and disdain for “creative deviation.” Kavrix wears a mechanical monocle linked to a head-mounted lens array and is never without his automaton assistant “Clank.”

Chief Engineer Varnak Ironsprocket – The lead designer of the Sky Cavity’s lighting system and most Dominion siege frames. Short even for a kobold, Varnak’s soot-streaked coat carries scorch marks from “a dozen successful misfires.” He has a booming laugh and names all his tools.

Overseer Vorrak Flamebrow – A red-scaled dragonborn commander of Dalath’s heavy labor corps. Silent, massive, and revered, Vorrak is known for solving disputes with a single glance. His gauntlets are forged from blast-tempered fragment-steel.

Culture

Dalath celebrates functionality, endurance, and ingenuity. Mistakes are recorded, studied, and rarely forgiven. Even the smallest components carry deep meaning—if a single bolt fails, so too might the whole city. Kobolds are treated with rare respect here, and some even rise to command. Invention is honored, but only if it works under pressure.
