Arcane Infused Material

Arcane Infused Materials, or AIMs, are objects that, as the name implies, were previously infused with magic, as a result of direct enchantments from Magi, or other supernatural sources. Interestingly, not all AIMs lost their magical properties after The Collapse, and as a result some remain in use to this day, though their applications are limited.   Not to be confused with Arcane Machina, which represents far more convoluted mechanisms empowered by Arcana.   Arcane Infused Material are commonly distinguished by the following categories:

Enchanted Items

Enchanted Items are previously mundane objects and devices that were enchanted by Magi, either for personal use or as a professional commission. This category covers the vast majority of AIMs, as their effects could range from enhancing the properties of the items, to adding the effects of spells or changing its function entirely. Particularly notable examples of this are bags that would be capable of containing vast quantities more than its physical space would allow, keys that would change its shape to fit whatever lock they were being applied to, and a quill pen that would write a duplicate message on an identical parchment regardless of distance.   By the time The Collapse occurred, Enchanted Items would see common use in modern societies, regardless of nation. Some Magician's Guilds would produce them commercially, with dedicated storefronts being available in most notable cities and towns that offered such items to provide quality of life for their owners. It is said that people became so used to some of these Enchantments that the average individual would make use of at least 10 AIMs per day.   However, the majority of Enchanted Items reverted to their original, mundane state with the advent of The Collapse. It has been speculated that the cause for this would be the abrupt severance of the original enchanters' Arcane energies - The most frequent magic users were either disintegrated or fell victim to Arcane Irradiation-adjacent illnesses and passed soon after the event. Without the original enchanters sustaining these items, they became effectively useless.   Curiously, it was not common knowledge among the public that such a thing could occur, and not all Enchanted Items suffered this fate. While they are substantially rare today as a result, these tended to be original copies of the items, and not versions that would become mass produced. "The most popular theory regarding these is that the Enchantment processes used to create the 'retail' AIMs were signficantly rushed, or generally less effective, in order to produce larger quantities of the product." - Dr. J Trell, The Magic We Lost, 1141

Crystalline Arcana

An alternative method of Enchantment, some magi wished to instead focus their raw, unshaped Arcana into more malleable forms. The Ivorburn Research Institute performed much investigation into this around the middle of their lifespan, eventually uncovering that certain types of Crystals were the most effective at storing these energies. The actual applications of this were limited as they proved to be a great challenge to implement into practical technologies, and as such the majority of technology that utilized them were experimental - Largely government-funded projects that did not see widespread use, or as supplemental energy sources for Arcane Machina. This latter implementation makes Crystalline Arcana an extremely valuable find for Scavengers, especially those that search derelict major population centres.   Most notable of the projects were advanced weapon technologies. While the the Crystals were capable of providing long term energy solutions in practice, it was initially discovered by the Enphunian Empire that, under the right conditions, this energy could be harnessed into sharp beams of intense power, at the cost of a dramatic reduction in the lifespan of these crystals. The weapons produced implemented electrical charges to activate the crystals - It should be noted that, at the time, using electricity for advanced technologies was unheard of, having been dismissed as inferior to Arcana in previous attempts to use it for new technologies. These weapons proved to be extremely deadly, and were put into production, but The Collapse occurred before they would see any major field usage - Though they were utilized in a few small skirmishes.   While the weapons were put into production, they are exceptionally rare due to the breakdown of Enphune, with several longstanding rewards being offered for anyone able to recover the blueprints for the elusive weapons, as well as any possible methods to create more Crystalline Arcana. As a result, the weapons in particular are prized possessions of collectors, fetching absurd prices among high class traders. They are almost never seen used for personal defense, as a result, but it was been discovered that these weapons are particularly effective at disposing of Spectralis creatures, capable of harming them even in their natural intangible states.

Naturally-Occurring Arcane Items

While significantly less has been understood about this classification, there are some Arcane Infused Materials that are believed to have been created by natural environments. Typically found in areas particularly exposed to the elements, these natural materials are difficult to control in their output, generating energies of their related element when exposed to other Arcane sources. The infused element is directly correlated to the conditions under which they were created, such as stones enchanted with Water properties, or woodland objects that have been under the effects of a Thunderstorm.   Usage of these was experimented upon in the decades before The Collapse, aiming to use the large wellsprings of natural power possessed by the material, and limited success was achieved. The primary usage of them under this context was to enhance the effects of existing Arcane Machina. However, with most other easily utilized Arcane sources now being rendered inert, there is currently no research being performed into the matter.
