Levels of Passivity
Also known as "passive affinity", this affinity merely allows the resistance to nuon-poisoning. There are 22 subsets of passive affinity (passivity), but they are usually condensed into the following 5:
V
No passive affinity at all. You'll be melted like cheese on a frozen pizza in a microwave if you so much as think about nuons. Recommended: Nothing can save your soul.
IV
Standard gear should keep you safe, but definitely don't take your mask off for some fresh air... oh look, your face is falling off. Recommended: extra thick hazmat suit.
III
This is the most common level of passivity. You could survive mid-level doses unprotected for a couple of minutes, but after that, the poisoning starts. Low doses for a longer period is unpleasant and unhealthy but tolerable. High doses are fatal.
II
Direct contact with contaminated articles might give you similar symptoms to a seasonal allergy while low doses have practically no effect. A large enough dose is still fatal.
I
Hypothetically, you would be able to prance around naked in GL facilities during the Antarctic Disaster as long as you stand for enough away from the initial blast zone. Affinity does not protect you from vaporisation.
Note: there is no record of epsilon passivity in combination with 2nd or 1st-degree affinity, nor is there anyone with this level of passivity still alive to this day.
Null Affinity
Null affinity describes the condition where one has one or more 1st-degree affinities but not 2nd-degree. Using their affinity is a life-threatening risk and may be best not used at all.
