Element Alignment in Erenel | World Anvil

Element Alignment

Element Alignment is a character development tool meant to help build your character's identity and replaces the standard Alignment system. It does not dictate your actions or include any elements of good or evil. Instead, we look at six characteristic archetypes and offer competing choices to help you better understand the traits of your character.
Al'Madoon, the Architect, created the four Elemental Planes; air, earth, fire and water. The Architect would use their foundation, such as how a painter uses prime colors to paint a masterpiece, to fill the world with the living. What Al'Madoon did not account for were two additional elements formed by the proximity of the four.
  • Ash from the union of Air, Earth and Fire.
  • Mist from the union of Air, Earth and Water.
These six elements created by the Architect help define morality and are present in all intelligent creatures. Their diversity and opposition shape an individual's personality and identity. However, an individual can vary from their alignment's typical behavior, and few people are perfectly and consistently faithful. Consider each element choice as a guideline to shape your values and character emotion.   Choose one of each opposing element to select your character's element alignment. Your character will have a total of three elements from the list below. Feel free to consult each element before choosing to help you understand how each element can shape your character.

BUILD YOUR ELEMENT ALIGNMENT

Choose one of each opposing element. You can never have two opposing elements as part of your element alignment.
AIR (Creativity) or EARTH (Diligence)
ASH (Individuality) or MIST (Community)
FIRE (Passion) or WATER (Control)
An Erenel element alignment example would be Air, Mist, and Water (creative, community, control). Use the descriptions below for more insight into each element.

AIR

An open mind is essential in finding solutions to life's problems.
The creative element, Air, represents intuition and thinking outside the box. Improvisation and clever creative thinking emerge from flexibility. You always follow your gut. At its extreme, you can become distracted, unpredictable and difficult to work with.

EARTH

Studious learning and reasoning are essential in finding solutions to life's problems.
The diligent element, Earth, represents intellectual caution and steady progress. Organization and time-honored methods create solutions with precision and detail. At its extreme, you can lack innovation and stifle creative breakthroughs.

Conflict between Air and Earth

Air is chaotic and sacrifices certainty for speed when solving a problem. If they feel it in their gut, it's all they need. Air is not afraid to question tradition and is excellent at solving complex issues.   Earth is ordered and sacrifices speed for certainty when solving a problem. Why deviate from a tried and true method without a good reason? Earth is concerned with minimizing mistakes and avoiding ill-conceived plans.

ASH

I strive to be the best version of myself.
The individuality element, Ash, represents self-sufficiency and individualism. You are productive, valuing freedom and individual accomplishment. You dare others to follow their dreams. At its extreme, you could force inequality or societal corruption.

MIST

I hope to uplift everyone around me for strength in unity.
The collective element, Mist, represents unity for safety and compassion. You desire an ordered society, valuing the collective more than the well-being of an individual. At its extreme, you could look to tyranny to provide safety to all.

Conflict between Ash and Mist

Ash rewards individuals according to their contributions and respective talent. They prefer quality over quantity and encourage taking risks in life for prosperity. Ash does not believe in a predetermined destiny.   Mist rewards each individual the same believing all should be cared for equally. They prefer quantity over quality and will gladly sacrifice hundreds of individual lives for the survival of their community.

FIRE

To find happiness, life must be experienced.
The explosive element, Fire, represents your primal emotions and need for freedom. Impulsive and passionate, you act first, launching yourself into exciting experiences. At its extreme, you can become obsessive and struggle with self control.

WATER

To find happiness in life, one must find peace.
An element of mindfulness, Water, represents conscious control over oneself. You seek self-improvement through will power and value discipline in your daily life. At its extreme, you could become judgmental and overly cautious.

Conflict between Fire and Water

Fire is energetic and seeks adventure, chasing their dreams without a sense of regret. They prefer to live loudly, sacrificing the present to risk it all and satisfy their ambitions.   Water is reserved and dedicates itself to a sense of purpose. They prefer to invest in a process and believe attempting to satisfy a never-ending ambition will only lead to short-term happiness.
