Leoric Burberry was a well-respected and renowned Knight of Wyeheath for nearly all of his professional life, at one point even serving as the King’s personal guard. He retired after nearly three decades of service, after suffering injuries at the hand of a great, giant warrior. However, he enjoyed his relatively young retirement and finally spending time with his wife Asylla. The couple gave birth to a pair of twin boys, Leoric III, and Bertrand. As twins normally are, the boys were highly competitive in their upbringing. Leoric was stronger and excelled in feats of strength while Bertrand leaned more heavily into his studies, particularly in mechanical design. Both boys followed in the footsteps of their father and became townguards of Wyeheath, and eventually knights of the city.
Leoric II excelled in knighthood, gaining promotion after promotion. He began getting a reputation as the town’s best fencer and jouster. Between his increased rate of pay and his competition winnings, Leoric was beginning to become quite wealthy. Bertrand on the other hand, was struggling financially and often found himself tasked with work he found menial and unchallenging.
For months, Bertrand worked as an overnight guard to the town treasury. He grew bored and despondent in this position. One night he began to study and tinker with the arcane lock that sat on the treasury door. He did this for a few days, and one evening, with a bit of help from some tools Bertrand had acquired in town, the lock popped. Bertrand couldn’t help but peer at the riches inside. The first night, he pocketed for himself a small sum of ten gold pieces, feeling the city owed him this payment anyway. As time went on, Bertrand became greedier and cocky in his exploration and looting of the treasury. He even began finding his way past other locks in town late at night, and selling the secrets he would find to seedier members (The Midnight Tree) of the Bully Brawlers Association in town.
Bertrand noticed rumors about himself beginning to circulate town, regarding the more ornate jewelry he had recently taken to wearing. Fearing for his safety and status as knight, Bertrand opted to step down from knighthood and start a locksmithing and trapmaking operation. However, his desire for riches, status, and the approval of his father had not yet been sated...
